President Yoon Seok-yeol leaves for NATO summit
Multilateral Diplomatic Stage for 5 Days
President Yoon Seok-yeol is leaving to attend the NATO summit in Madrid, Spain.
It will be President Yoon's first overseas trip since taking office and his first NATO summit as South Korean president.
At this meeting, Korea was invited as an Asia-Pacific partner.
President Yoon will carry out 14 diplomatic schedules, including the NATO summit event and bilateral meetings, for three nights and five days.
First, the official schedule will begin with the Korea-Finland summit on the afternoon of the 28th local time. After meeting with NATO Secretary-General Stoltenberg, he will attend a welcoming gala dinner hosted by the Spanish king and queen at the Madrid Palace with his wife Kim Gun-hee.
On the 29th, he will meet King Felipe VI of Spain. It will then hold a series of summits with the Netherlands, Poland and Denmark.
The Korea-U.S.-Japan summit will also be held in the afternoon of the 29th for the first time in four years and nine months.
The leaders of South Korea, the U.S. and Japan are expected to reaffirm their commitment to denuclearize North Korea and discuss countermeasures.
The bilateral talks between South Korea and Japan, which drew attention, are unlikely to take place.
A high-ranking official at the presidential office explained, "The leaders of Korea and Japan will meet at least three times, including the NATO summit and the Korea-U.S.-Japan summit."
On the 30th, President Yoon will hold a series of summits with the Czech Republic and Britain to discuss nuclear cooperation.
He will hold a luncheon meeting with Spanish businessmen and engage in sales diplomacy.
