On June 25th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted the 'Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Seaweed-Based Sustainable Bioenergy Workshop'. This event brought together experts from the seaweed bioenergy sector, both domestic and international, including industry leaders, researchers, academics, diplomats in South Korea, and government officials from APEC member countries.
The workshop is a part of the Ministry’s initiative this year, leveraging the APEC fund to promote cooperation within APEC for sustainable seaweed-based bioenergy production. The primary goal was to assess the potential of seaweed for climate change adaptation and bioenergy production, and to discuss collaborative strategies for expanding production. Seaweed is increasingly recognized for its rapid growth, high carbon sequestration capacity, and relatively low environmental impact, especially as the Asia-Pacific region faces rising energy transition demands.
Industry experts from South Korea, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, and France presented on the global status and potential of seaweed-based bioenergy, along with current research and technological trends. Additionally, government officials from APEC member countries including Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, China, Chile, the Philippines, and Taiwan shared insights into their national policies and industrial status, and discussed policy measures for regional cooperation.
Yoon Hyun-soo, Director-General for Climate and Environmental Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the potential of seaweed as a sustainable bioenergy feedstock and carbon sink during his opening remarks. He emphasized its role in addressing climate change and enhancing eco-friendly energy independence in the Asia-Pacific region. Yoon expressed hopes that South Korea, with its advanced aquaculture technologies and vast marine resources, would expand cooperation with APEC countries to promote regional knowledge sharing, research activities, and enhance industry capabilities.
The workshop is seen as a significant contribution towards exploring cooperation for climate change adaptation and achieving clean energy transition in the Asia-Pacific region. It has laid the foundation for the growth of climate-related industries. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its commitment to ongoing diplomatic efforts for regional climate change adaptation and clean energy transition in the future.
