On July 12th, 2025, we, the LeadersTimes Youth Press, went to the Japanese and Chinese concession that are located in Korea. The concession was both built in the 1880s. In the Japanese concession, which was smaller than the Chinese concession, there were not many Japanese in the Japanese concession when we went. In the Chinese concession, however, there were still numerous Chinese architecture, traditions, and people in the area with thousands of Chinese speakers living in the concession with other tourists visiting. This is because in 1919, Korean people did not like Japan controlling the Korea peninsula, so they burn some of the concession in Incheon as retaliation.
On August 7th to 9th, LeadersTimes Youth Journalists also went to a French concession located in Shanghai that was built after China lost in the opium war against Britain. So, China unfortunately had to sign the treaty of Nanking, making Shanghai a place for foreigners to do trade and settlements. Still, in Shanghai, there is a tremendously well formed city with french style architecture, and many tourists from different countries visit Shanghai to tour french concessions.
The difference between the French concession and Japanese concession is that the French concession fully had police authority inside the concession for decades, operating its own municipal council, courts, and law enforcement. The Japanese concession, on the other hand, had police authority, like the French concession, but with very limited authority, and it was focused on commercially rather than politically autonomous
