The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held the “Capacity-Building Workshop for Resilient Supply Chains” at Songdo Convensia in Incheon, alongside the 3rd APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM3).

The workshop was part of Korea’s long-standing APEC Capacity Building Needs Initiative (CBNI), which has been ongoing since 2012. With global supply chains facing increasing uncertainty due to geopolitical tensions and the pandemic, the event reflected APEC members’ growing interest in Korea’s policies and strategies for stable supply chain management.

Over the past decade, Korea has organized more than 40 CBNI workshops during three phases—2012 to 2014, 2015 to 2017, and 2018 to 2021—covering diverse topics such as intellectual property rights, dispute settlement, trade in services and investment, rules of origin, and e-commerce.

This year’s program featured four sessions addressing supply chain restructuring trends, sharing of best practices, the use of digital technologies to strengthen resilience, and improving the implementation of free trade agreements (FTAs) to support supply chain stability. More than 70 participants attended, including representatives from all 21 APEC member economies, domestic and international businesses, and international organizations.

In her opening remarks, Lee Ji-yoon, Korea’s APEC Senior Official, highlighted the shift in global supply chains, noting“Global supply chains, once built primarily around cost efficiency, are now shifting toward structures that prioritize resilience. This workshop aims to help APEC members address supply chain uncertainties and build stronger systems by making full use of digital technologies and institutional frameworks such as FTAs.”

Participants expressed strong interest in Korea’s supply chain stabilization policies and its application of digital technologies in customs and logistics. They also praised the workshop as a valuable opportunity to examine FTA provisions related to supply chains and to explore areas for future improvement.

As this year’s APEC host economy, Korea emphasized that the workshop not only showcased its policy expertise but also reinforced regional solidarity and cooperation to strengthen supply chain resilience across the Asia-Pacific.
