President Lee Jae-myung announced on the 11th that Korea and Vietnam, marking the 10th anniversary of their Free Trade Agreement (FTA) this year, have agreed to intensify efforts to reach their target of expanding bilateral trade volume to 150 billion dollars by 2030.

Speaking at a joint press conference after holding a summit with Vietnamese Communist Party General Secretary To Lam, who is on a state visit to Seoul, Lee emphasized that the two countries will strengthen cooperation across multiple sectors. “Based on strong political trust, the two countries also agreed to enhance cooperation in the defense industry and public security to contribute to peace and stability in the region,” he said.

The summit concluded with the adoption of the ‘Joint Statement on “Deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Korea and Vietnam.’ Both leaders pledged to further advance bilateral cooperation in a broader and future-oriented manner.

President Lee highlighted the importance of bolstering ties in diplomacy, security, and defense, stressing that high-level exchanges are essential to building mutual understanding and political trust. He noted that the two countries would also strengthen collaboration at the level of national assemblies and local governments.

Economic cooperation emerged as another central theme of the talks. Lee underscored the shared commitment to accelerate mutually beneficial economic ties, particularly in strategically significant infrastructure sectors such as nuclear power, high-speed rail, and new city development. He pointed to Vietnam’s upcoming nuclear power plant projects and the North-South high-speed railway as crucial for securing stable power supplies and modernizing transportation and logistics. “I expect successful cooperation cases to emerge based on our companies’ excellent technological capabilities and extensive experience,” Lee said.

On regional and security issues, the two leaders affirmed their commitment to work closely toward achieving peace on the Korean Peninsula and advancing solutions to the North Korean nuclear issue. “I explained our government’s vision for building a Korean Peninsula where the South and North coexist and prosper on the foundation of solid peace, and asked for General Secretary To Lam’s cooperation,” Lee said. In response, To Lam expressed support for Seoul’s efforts to resume inter-Korean dialogue and cooperation, and pledged Vietnam’s active contribution to peace and stability on the peninsula.

The two countries also vowed to maintain close collaboration on multilateral stages such as APEC and the United Nations. President Lee invited Vietnam to participate in the APEC Summit scheduled to be held in Gyeongju later this year, to which To Lam responded positively.
