    [LeadersTimes]OnMay14,theMinistryofScienceandICThostedthelaunchingceremonyfor the Global Association for Advanced Air Mobility (G3AM), the world's first internationalfactual standardization organization in the field of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), at the Sky31Conventionin LotteWorld Tower,Seoul.    Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) includes short-range urban air mobility (UAM) and regionalair mobility (RAM) focused on medium and long-distance travel. It is gaining attention as afuture transportation solution that expands transportation options and addressesenvironmental issues associated with existing transportation.    Given that AAM integrates various digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI),mobile communication, and data analytics, establishing international standards forinteroperability, reliability, and sustainability is crucial. The AAM industry is still in its earlystages, making this an opportune moment to take the initiative in international standardizationefforts.    Launchedjustthisweek,theG3AMisaninternationalfactualstandardizationorganizationled by experts to develop, maintain, and manage new standards across various domains,     includinginformationsharingsystems,trafficmanagement,andflightcontrol,promotinginteroperabilityand compatibility.    The founding members of the G3AM include 63 key Korean AAM-related companies, suchas Korean Air, Incheon International Airport Corporation, FineVT Robotics, HanwhaSystem, Korea Airports Corporation, Hyundai Motor, and three mobile carriers (SKT, KT,and LGU+). Multinational corporations like Onesky, Skyports, Padinagroup, and ANRATechnologies also participated. Additionally, companies such as Joby Aviation andVolocopterare consideringjoining the G3AM.     During the event, Johnscal Walker, chairman of the International Organization forStandardization's Unmanned Aircraft Systems, delivered a keynote speech on the "Role ofInternational Organizations in Supporting AAM." At the launch anniversary conference,Korean Air presented successful cases of Korean-style urban air transportation (K-UAM).Hanwha System and Korea Aerospace Industries showcased next-generation electricpropulsionverticaltakeoffandlandingaircraft(eVTOL)andfutureaircraft(AAV).Skyports,a leading company in the vertiport sector and a member of G3AM since last year, presentedon the status of vertiport infrastructure development.    JeonYoung-soo,theDirectorGeneralofInformationandCommunicationIndustryPolicyatthe Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, "The high-tech air transportation sector is an areawhere Korea can lead through digital technology standards. We will support the G3AM inplaying a pivotal role in developing advanced air transportation technology and creating anecosystem."

• South Korean Industry Reacts to UK's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism

      The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy convened an industry meeting on May 14th to address concerns surrounding the United Kingdom's proposed carbon border adjustment mechanism. This meeting aimed to solicit feedback from stakeholders on the design proposal unveiled by the UK on March 21st and to strategize joint responses.    The UK's proposed mechanism includes items such as steel, aluminum, cement, fertilizers, hydrogen, ceramics, and glass.Notably, South Korea exports steel worth $300 million to the UK, constituting 98% of the export value of the seven applicable items as of 2023.    While the South Korean industry acknowledges the similarity between the UK's proposal and the European Union's existing mechanism, concerns have been raised regarding quarterly emissions reporting, cost payments, and the lack of an adaptation period due to the proposed immediate implementation in 2027.     Shim Jin-soo, Director-General for Trade Strategy Support, emphasized the need for proactive engagement with regulatory authorities to ensure fair competition for South Korean companies. He stated, "Countries like the UK, in addition to the European Union, are considering or implementing measures similar to carbon border adjustment mechanisms, raising concerns for our exporting companies."    In response, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy commits to ongoing monitoring of carbon border adjustment mechanisms globally, including those of the European Union and the UK. Additionally, they pledge to maintain close communication with industry stakeholders and advocate for South Korea's interests in subsequent discussions.    This meeting underscores the importance of proactive engagement and collaborative efforts to address the challenges posed by evolving global carbon regulations while safeguarding the competitiveness of South Korean industries on the international stage. 

• RuralDevelopmentAdministrationIdentifiedMicroorganismsthatDecomposeAgriculturalWaste Plastics

      [LeadersTimes]TheRuralDevelopmentAdministrationhasidentifiedmicroorganismsthatweaken the physical and chemical durability of polyethylene surfaces used in agriculturalproducts, such as vinyl mulching and greenhouse covers, by modifying and decomposingthem.    Polyethylene (PE) is the most commonly used plastic in agriculture due to its excellentdurability and chemical resistance. It is primarily used for mulching and greenhouse cladding.However, discarded waste vinyl remains in the environment and adversely affects agricultureas it does not decompose naturally. Significant research efforts have focused on developingenvironmentally friendly decomposition methods.    The newly discovered microorganisms, KACC 83073BP and Trametes trogii KACC83074BP, were isolated from domestic agricultural lands and forests. These fungi attach tothe surface of polyethylene films, initiating the oxidative degradation process, the first step inbiodegradation, significantly reducing the mechanical properties of the plastic.    Among these, Trametes trogii KACC 83074BP exhibited the highest oxidation effect onmulchingfilm.After10daysoftreatmentwiththisstrain,theoxidationeffectroseby44.7%compared to the single treatment with KACC 83073BP from the Pleurotus genus. Transcriptanalysis of Trametes trogii KACC 83074BP revealed a gene whose expression increasedearly and late in the deterioration process of the polyethylene film. Pleurotus spp. KACC83073BP, when incubated with Preussia spp. HRK33 KACC 81283BP, reduced the initialoxidation time of polyethylene by more than 50% compared to single treatments.    In general, studies have reported that microbial oxidation of plastic takes at least a month.However,themicroorganismsdiscoveredbytheRuralDevelopmentAdministration     demonstrated a significantly accelerated decomposition process, with oxidation of thepolyethylene surface beginning within approximately 7 days of culturing.    Theadministrationhasappliedforfourpatentsrelatedtothesemicroorganismsthatpromotepolyethylene decomposition. These findings will serve as fundamental data for the"Proteomics-based Polyethylene Decomposition Enzyme and Decomposition MechanismInvestigation Project" (Korea Program for International Cooperation in AgriculturalTechnology).    "The amount of plastic that is thrown away every year and enters the environment issignificant, so eco-friendly treatment alternatives is necessary,” said Sangbum Kim at theAgricultural Microbiology Division of the Rural Development Administration. "This study ishighly meaningful as it secureda research foundation for the eco-friendly treatment of wasteplastics…. We aim to uncover the action mechanism of polyethylene-degrading enzymesusing omics tools such as transcriptomics and proteomics."

• IAEA Hosts International Dialogue in Korea for Commercialization of Next-Generation Small Modular Reactors

    The Ministry of Science, Technology, and Information Communication recently announced Deputy Minister Lee Chang-yoon's attendance at the opening ceremony of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Innovation in Nuclear Reactors and International Joint Fuel Projects Dialogue Forum, held at the Jeju Convention Center on May 7th.    The INPRO Dialogue Forum serves as a vital platform for international academic exchange between nuclear technology holder and user countries since 2010. Held 1-2 times a year, this forum addresses current issues within the nuclear industry. This marks Korea's third time hosting the event, following previous forums held in 2012 and 2019. The 22nd session of the forum focused on the successful development and sustainable deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).    Key stakeholders from major countries, including representatives from the US Department of Energy and Russia's state-owned nuclear companies, participated in the forum. They shared insights on crucial policy topics essential for the commercialization of SMRs, ranging from core technology acquisition to safety evaluations, economic viability, and infrastructure development.    The Ministry is spearheading a policy shift towards SMR-centered next-generation reactor development, departing from the conventional public-led large nuclear power plant approach. The aim is to swiftly secure core technologies for innovative small modular reactors and various non-light water reactors, including sodium-cooled fast reactors, molten salt reactors, and high-temperature gas-cooled reactors.    Deputy Minister Lee Chang-yoon articulated the vision for next-generation nuclear technology development and the establishment of an industrial ecosystem during the opening ceremony.The Ministry plans to unveil specific implementation plans in the first half of this year. 

• South Korea and U.S. Hold 10th Energy Security Dialogue in Houston

      On April 30th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the U.S. Department of State convened the 10th South Korea-U.S. Energy Security Dialogue at the prestigious Baker Institute for Public Policy in Houston, Texas.   Discussions centered around key topics such as decarbonization efforts, clean energy cooperation, reconstruction of energy infrastructure in Ukraine, critical minerals and electric vehicle batteries, and collaboration on multilateral platforms.  The timing of the dialogue was significant given the escalating tensions in the Middle East, amplifying the importance of enhancing energy security cooperation between South Korea, a nation heavily reliant on energy imports, and the United States, a major energy exporter and ally. Additionally, both parties explored avenues to expedite the transition to clean energy in response to the pressing global challenge of climate change, while bolstering collaboration on multilateral platforms.  The United States, as the world's largest LNG exporter, plays a pivotal role in South Korea's energy landscape, with approximately 40 million tons of LNG imported annually. Furthermore, with renewable energy accounting for over 20% of total energy production in the United States as of 2023, there are promising prospects for South Korean companies in sectors such as solar panels and hydrogen power generation.  The 10th South Korea-U.S. Energy Security Dialogue, held in Houston, renowned as the energy capital, holds significance not only for fostering intergovernmental cooperation but also for facilitating dialogue between energy companies from both nations. This dialogue serves as a platform to support the entry of South Korean companies into the U.S. energy market and explore medium- to long-term cooperation plans with the U.S. academic and energy security community.   Looking ahead, the 11th South Korea-U.S. Energy Security Dialogue is slated to take place in South Korea next year, continuing the tradition of bilateral engagement on critical energy security issues

• Overseas Consuls General Meeting Discusses Global Multilateral Diplomacy

    The Overseas Consuls General Meeting in 2024 concluded with a final topic discussion on the morning of April 25th, centering on "Global Multilateral Diplomacy." The session saw the participation of Kang In-sun, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, alongside the consuls general. The discussion was structured into three parts, each addressing crucial aspects of international relations.   In the first segment, emphasis was placed on enhancing contributions to international peace and security by elevating democratic standards and engaging in activities within the UN Security Council. This included exploring avenues for expanding Korea's role in promoting global stability.    Vice Minister Kang, in her opening remarks, underscored the significance of Korea's multilateral diplomacy amidst geopolitical and geoeconomic shifts. She urged a thoughtful consideration of goals, stressing the consul general's crucial role in realizing Korea's ambition as a global pivotal state.    During the subsequent session, Kwon Ki-hwan, Director-General for Multilateral Diplomacy, highlighted Korea's commitment to strengthening international solidarity based on universal values like democracy and human rights. He outlined plans for Korea to play a more active role in global affairs during its upcoming term on the UN Security Council.    In the following segment, Kim Hee-sang, Director-General for Economic Diplomacy, outlined the government's vision on key global economic issues, including supply chains, digitalization, AI, climate, and energy. He discussed Korea's strategies for engagement within major multilateral economic forums such as the G7, G20, APEC, and OECD.    In the final session, Kwon Ki-hwan reiterated the importance of effective implementation of global South diplomacy by Korea through initiatives like advanced-country-type Official Development Assistance (ODA) and strengthening strategic partnerships with major donor countries.    The topic discussions served as a platform to share Korea's vision and contributions to the international community, gather insights from the consul general, and propose policies to bolster Korea's role as a "global pivotal state" in multilateral diplomacy. 

• AhnChung-guk: Unveilingthe Journeyof aNorth KoreanDefector and Artist

                     [LeadersTimes]InanexclusiveinterviewconductedwithartistAhnChung-guk,aNorthKorean defector and emerging artist, insights into his journey and artistic vision wereunveiled at his special exhibit “Shapes Beyond” at the Inter-Korean Cultural IntegrationCenter.    Born in Hamgyeong-do, North Korea, Ahn Chung-guk began his artistic journey due to hisfather's unfulfilled dreams. Reflecting on his childhood, Ahn shared, “When I was born, hegave his unrealized ambitions onto me, urging me to pursue painting.” However, when Ahnwas twelve years old, his father defected to South Korea. Before defecting, he—a carpenterwithakeeninterestinart—giftedhispaintingsuppliestoAhn’scousin,who,outofgratitude,encouraged Ahn to pursue drawing in earnest.    At the age of fifteen, Ahn embarked on his own journey of defection. His father's departurehad left an indelible mark on his family, culminating in a daring escape across the TumenRiver into China. With each step towards freedom, Ahn found himself mesmerized by thevibrancy of life beyond the confines of North Korea, traversing through China, Thailand, andLaos before finally reaching South Korea in approximately three and a half months. Heremarked, “I was captivated by the artificial vibrant lights, sounds, and the wave of cars…greatexcitementtothepointofecstasy.”Itwasajourneyfraughtwithuncertaintyyetimbuedwith resilience and hope.    Upon his arrival in South Korea, Ahn faced the daunting task of rebuilding his life fromscratch with his family. Despite the challenges stemming from his family's direcircumstances, he gradually adjusted to school life with support from the Citizens' Alliancefor North Korean Human Rights. Encouraged by a compassionate high school art teacher andbolstered by his mother's eventual approval, Ahn ultimately embraced his artistic calling,graduatedfrom Hongik University,and now isactive as an artist.     Intriguingly, Ahn's artistic repertoire diverges from the expected narratives of North Koreandefectors, eschewing direct references to his homeland in favor of a more introspectiveexploration of personal freedom and identity. Initially bewildered by the exaggerated anddistinctive styles of South Korean cartoons and abstract art, Ahn explored and discovered thateven the practice of scribbling can evolve into a meaningful artistic expression. From then on,his artistic evolution has reflected a journey of self-discovery and creative liberation.    Central to Ahn's artistic ethos is the concept of locationality, wherein the textures andmemories of his upbringing in North Korea serve as a thematic foundation for his work.Throughmediumslikecementandsymbolicmotifssuchascirclesandlight,Ahnendeavorsto encapsulate the essence of his experiences, inviting viewers to embark on a poignantjourneyof introspection and discovery.    As audiences immerse themselves in Ahn Chung-guk's exhibits, they are encouraged to first“use their own wings of imagination” and then contemplate the enigmatic question—Who isAhn Chung-guk?       [LeadersTimes]LeeJoon-il,theDirector-GeneralforNorthKoreanNuclearAffairsatSouthKorea’s foreign ministry, held a series of discussions with representatives from the UnitedStates, Japan, and China during the 32nd Northeast Asian Cooperation Dialogue (NEACD),whichtook place from May9 to 10 inTokyo, Japan.    On May 9, Lee met with Liu Xiaoming, the Special Representative of the ChineseGovernmentonKoreanPeninsulaAffairs.Theyexchangedviewsonthecurrentsituationonthe peninsula and discussed future countermeasures.   On the same day, Lee held talks with the U.S. Senior Official for the DPRK Jung Pak andHiroyukiNamazu,theDirector-GeneralofAsianandOceanianAffairsBureauattheJapan’sforeign ministry. The three leaders expressed deep regret over North Korea's continuednuclear and missile development and provocations, which poses a serious threat to peace andstabilityon theKorean Peninsula andto the internationalcommunity.    The representatives also shared their concerns about the deepening illegal cooperation,including arms trade, between North Korea and Russia, and decided to continue leadinginternational efforts to prevent such activities. In particular, as members of the SecurityCouncil, they agreed to push for thorough implementation of sanctions against North Korea.This comes after Russia's veto ended the UN Security Council's expert panel mission onNorth Korea. The three countries also evaluated cooperative efforts among South Korea, theU.S., and Japan, including a working-group meeting on countering North Korea's cyberthreats.     The envoys agreed to continue cooperation on human rights and humanitarian issues,including matters concerning abductees, detainees, prisoners of war, and North Koreandefectors overseas.LeeexplainedSouth Korea'sunificationeffortstoexpand universalvaluesoffreedomandhumanrights,whileU.S.andJapaneserepresentativesreaffirmedtheirsupport for a free and peaceful unified Korean Peninsula as expressed in the Camp Davidjoint statement.    On May 10, Lee discussed North Korea's nuclear issues with U.S. senior official Jung Pak.They agreed to maintain close cooperation with the goal of complete denuclearization. Theyalso discussed preparing for all possibilities, including potential provocations from NorthKorea such as an additional satellite launch and unilateral attempt to change the status quo inthe West Sea. Following the successful operation of the South Korea-U.S. Working Group tocounter cyber threats, they agreed to continue efforts to prevent North Korea from evadingsanctions and blocking illegal funding sources. Lee highlighted South Korea's efforts toimprove human rights and humanitarian issues in North Korea, and both sides agreed tostrengthen their cooperation in these areas. They emphasized the importance of China'sconstructive role in resolving Korean Peninsula issues and agreed to maintain communicationwith China through various levels of consultation.

• Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and International Maritime Organization (IMO)Jointly Discuss Autonomous Ship Policy

      Q. 연세대학교 실내건축학과는?   A. 연세대학교 실내건축학과는 공간을 기획/계획/설계/관리 하는 등 실내 공간 전반에서 이루어지는 일에 대해 배우는 학과입니다. 직접 건물을 설계하고 도면을 그리고 모형을 만드는 디자인 실기 수업과 인간은 어떤 환경에서 어떤 디자인에서 공간의 이점을 얻을 수 있는지 이와 관련한 법규와 체계는 어떻게 되어 있는지 배우는 이론 수업을 배웁니다.     Q. 졸업 후의 진로는 어떻게 나뉘는 편입니까?   A. 크게 공간 기획 / 설계 / 관리의 3분야로 설명할 수 있습니다. 이는 실제로 건축 업무 진행 시 공간이 대개 기획 – 설계 – 관리 순으로 진행되는 점을 반영한 것입니다.   먼저 공간 기획 분야입니다. 연세대학교 실내건축학과에서 가장 많은 인재를 배출하는 분야로, 다양한 실내 공간들의 사용자 데이터를 조사한 후 이를 바탕으로 공간 구성에 대한 전략들을 구체화하는 것이 핵심 업무입니다. 또한 공간 레이아웃과 가구 배치 등 계획안을 작성한 후 건설사 및 시공사에게 전달하고, 그들에게서 받은 설계안을 검토하는 역할도 수행합니다.    다음으로 설계 분야입니다. 흔히 건축학과 하면 떠올리는 도면을 그리는 작업이 주 업무로, 말 그대로 기획안을 바탕으로 구체적인 설계를 수행합니다.   마지막으로 관리 분야입니다. 이들은 전체 프로젝트의 플랜을 관리하고 일정을 조율하는 쪽(PM)과, 시공이 완료된 뒤에 유지 관리를 하는 쪽(FM) 등으로 구분됩니다.     Q. 본교 실내건축학과만의 특별한 문화나 행사가 있습니까?   A. 특정 수업에서 선배들과의 만남을 가질 수 있습니다. 때에 따라 다르지만, 선배님들이 현직으로 계시는 기업에서 강연을 오시기 때문에 우리 학과 진로와 아주 밀접한 이야기를 들을 수 있어 유익합니다. 그리고 실내건축학과는 매년 10월에 연세대학교 백양누리홀에서 졸업 전시회를 개최합니다. 올해도 있을 예정이고, 누구든 제한 없이 와서 관람하실 수 있으니 실내건축학과 또는 유사학과에 관심이 있다면 학과가 배우는 내용과 만드는 작품들을 조금 더 가까이서 보실 수 있는 기회가 될 겁니다!   Q. 입학을 위해 준비해두면 좋은 것이 있습니까? 본인만의 입시 팁을 주자면?   A. 무엇이든 다양하게 해 봤으면 좋겠습니다. 카페를 가든, 도서관을 가서 책을 읽든, 디자인 잡지를 보든... 디자인 분야는 샘솟는 아이디어가 생명인데, 많이 돌아다녀보고 접해본 사소한 경험들이 어느날 갑자기 번뜩이는 아이디어로 변신할 때가 있습니다.   입시에 한해서 이야기한다면, ‘사람들에게 필요한 공간은 무엇인가?’라는 물음을 끊임없이 고민하는 자세가 필요합니다. “디자인이나 설계 잘하고 건축가 많이 알아요!”보다는, 배리어프리 공간에 대한 고민, 열/음/조명 환경 등 인체에 적합한 환경에 대한 고민, 복합문화공간에서 사람들의 요구사항을 어떻게 디자인으로 풀어낼 수 있을 것인가에 대한 고민 등 조금 더 학문적이고 구체적으로 생각하고 연구한 흔적들이 보이면 좋습니다.   Q. 미래의 후배들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있습니까?   A. 진심을 다해 해 보고 후회하는 게 낫지 않을까요. 어떤 목표든 너무 높아 보인다고 미리 마음 접고 편한 길을 찾기보다, 일단 올라가 봅시다. 올라가면 어디든 도달할 수 있어요. 요즘 입시 트렌드가 어떠하고, 친구들이 어떻게 말하고 보다는 나의 길을 믿으며 올라갑시다. 결국 입시는 나와의 싸움이니까요.   아, 그리고 넣고 싶은 학과나 학교가 있다면 주저 말고 한 번쯤 넣어보세요. 시도도 해보지 않으면 미련이 잔뜩 남아서 대학 평생 떠올리게 될 수도 있답니다 :)

OB 분들 중에는 현재 회사를 이끌고 계신 분도 있고, 대기업에 취직하신 분, 공문원을 하고 계신 분들 등등 다양한 분야에서 성공하신 분들의 이야기를 가까운 곳에서 직접 들을 수 있어 졸업 후 진로를 정하는 데에도 많이 도움이 되고 학교생활에 대한 팁이나 본인들이 살면서 얻은 깨달음을 아낌없이 전달해주셔서 대학생들에게 유익함이 아주 큰 행사입니다.   Q. 입학을 위해 준비해두면 좋은 것이 있습니까? 본인만의 입시 팁을 주자면?   A. 일단 가장 중요한건 누가 뭐래도 공부입니다. 특히 국어, 영어, 수학, 과학은 초, 중, 고등학교 때 공부한 내용들이 대학교 수업 내용과도 연관이 매우매우 크기 때문에 미리미리 공부를 열심히 해두지 않으면 대학와서도 수업에 적응하기 힘들겁니다. 사실 입시에 관해서는 딱 하나만 기억하면 됩니다. ‘남들보다 한 발만 더’. 항상 남들보다 한 발 일찍 출발해서 한 발 늦게 들어가는 의지가 중요해요. 남들과 똑같이 해서는 남들보다 성공할 수 없습니다. 많은 것을 요구하지 않습니다. 딱 한 발만 더 가면 됩니다. 그 사소한 차이들이 모여 나중에 분명 여러분을 성공으로 이끌어 줄 것입니다.   Q. 미래의 후배들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있습니까?   A. 공부하기 많이 힘들죠? 세상엔 뭐이리 재밌는 일들이 많은지 공부만 하려고 하면 재밌는 것들이 나를 막 방해하고, 살면서 별로 쓸데도 없는 것 같은 내용을 왜 공부하고있어야하나 싶고...사실 공부를 해야하는 목적은 여러분에게 시련을 주려는 겁니다. 힘들고 어려운 상황에 처했을 때 여러분이 얼마나 끈기있고 열심히 노력하는지를 보는거죠. 그 시련을 버티고 고개를 들었을 땐 여러분이 이전까지는 경험도 못해봤을 재미있는 일들이 여러분을 기다리고 있을 겁니다. 제가 그랬거든요ㅎㅎ. 그러니 여러분!     힘들어도 포기하지 말고 우리 열심히 살아보자구요! 고려대학교에서 여러분을 기다리고 있겠습니다.

    Q. 계명대학교 의예과는? A. 계명대학교 의과대학은 1899년 북장로교 의료선교사 존슨(Woodbridge O.Jonson)에 의해 설립된 제중원이 모태가 되어 영남권 초기 서양의술을 시작한 역사를 가지고 있습니다.  1978년 종합대학 '계명대학교'로 승격한 이후 1980년 동산기독병원과 통합하여 의과대학을 신설하여 지금에 이르고 있습니다. 2010년 계명대학교 성서캠퍼스로 이전 하였고 대구 지하철 2호선 강창역 근처에 학과 건물이 위치해 있습니다. 의과대학 건물과 계명대학교 동산병원이 연결되어 있어 본과 3학년 때부터 시작되는 실습 수업은 동산병원에서 진행하게 됩니다.   Q. 졸업 후의 진로는 어떻게 나뉘는 편입니까? A. 본과 4학년 동안 치르는 국가고시에 합격하면 졸업과 함께 의사 면허를 부여받을 수 있습니다. 이후의 진로는 여러 가지로 나뉘게 되는데, 현재 학생들이 가장 흔히 선택하는 것은 수련병원에서 인턴-전공의 등의 수련과정을 거치는 것입니다. 이 외에도 일차 진료를 보는 일반의, 연구를 중점으로 하는 기초의학 교수 등이 있습니다. 수련 과정을 거친 후에는 크게 대학병원에 남아 교수로서 후학 양성에 기여하거나, 2차병원/개원가로 나가 환자 진료를 보는 경우가 많습니다.   Q. 본교 의예과만의 특별한 문화나 행사가 있습니까? A. 계명대학교 의예과는 선후배 간의 교류를 위한 기회를 많이 열어두는 편입니다. 입학 당시 예과 2학년과 신입생을 한 명씩 매칭하여 학교 생활에 도움을 줄 수 있도록 합니다. 이외에도 동문회, 동아리, 교실원(쉽게 말하면 과목 도우미) 간 모임을 주기적으로 가집니다. 또한 의과대학 동아리마다 개최하는 신입생 환영 공연과 정기공연을 통해 학창 시절의 소중한 추억을 만들 수 있습니다. 의예과만의 특별한 행사로는 해부제를 꼽고 싶습니다. 인체를 공부하는 의예과 특성상 학생들의 교육을 위해 시신을 기증해 주시는 분들이 계십니다. 해부제는 그러한 분들의 숭고한 뜻을 기리기 위한 행사이며, 공부할 수 있는 기회를 주심에 감사드림과 함께 생명의 무거움을 느낄 수 있는 아주 중요한 행사라고 생각합니다.   Q. 입학을 위해 준비해두면 좋은 것이 있습니까? 본인만의 입시 팁을 주자면? A. 제가 입학한 지는 시간이 꽤 지나 현재의 입시와는 다소 거리가 있을지 모르나, 제가 후배님들께 드리고 싶은 말씀은 ‘현재에 집중하라’입니다. 누가‘고3은 공부를 가장 많이 하는 시기가 아니라, 공부에 대한 걱정을 가장 많이 하는 시기다’라고 하더라고요. 수험생 기간이 길고 힘드실 것 압니다. 까마득한 미래를 떠올리면 불안해지는 게 당연하므로, 오늘 내가 당장 할 수 있는 것에 집중하시면 좋겠습니다. 달리기에 비유하면 마라톤을 종점까지 내리 달리는 건 힘들지만, 짧은 스퍼트를 주기적으로 내는 게 더 효율적일 수 있다는 뜻입니다. 수능이 가까워질수록 그 스퍼트를 조금씩 더 자주, 더 길게 내면 좋겠죠. 저는 아주 특별한 사람들만이 의과대학에 간다고 생각하지 않습니다. 공부도 재능이라고들 하지만, 저는 그 노력과 끈기가 더 주요하다고 생각합니다. 그리고 그건 마음먹기에 따라 정말 누구나 할 수 있어요.   Q. 미래의 후배들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있습니까? • Competition for 'super-large AI' technology, the core of ChatGPT, is in full swing

  ChatGPT, an interactive artificial intelligence released by OpenAI on November 30, 2022, is becoming a social issue.Patent competition has been intensified to preoccupy the super-largeAI technology that is the basis of ChatGPT.  According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the number of ultra-large AI-related patent applications filed in the five major intellectual property countries (IP5: Korea, United States, Japan, China, and Europe) has increased by about 28 times over the past 10 years.   In particular, over the past five years, the average annual growth rate has been 61.3%, which seems to be the result of active research on AI after the 'AlphaGo shock in 2016'.   When looking at applicants by country, the United States (35.6%), China (31.0%), and Japan (11.6%) ranked in a row.  In terms of the average annual growth rate, Korea (89.7% on average) and China (79.3% on average) are showing a steep rise.    Korea reached 1,912 applications in 2020,thereby marking 319 timescompared to the number of 2011, when received only six applications per year. In 2019, Korea surpassed Japan in the annual number of applications.   Park Jae-il, head of the artificial intelligence big data review division at the Korean Intellectual Property Office said that "Super-large AI is a new growth engine for Korea to take a leap forward as a technology that has a great impact on various industries."

• European Parliament approves EU 'IRIS2 project' in response to Starlink

    On the 15th (Wednesday), the European Parliament approved the so-called "IRIS2" project, which will launch 170 orbital satellites by 2027 with a total investment of 3.15 billion euros.  IRIS2 is aimed to eliminate Internet blind spots through hundreds of satellite networks, ensuring confidential communications between European governments, intelligence agencies, security, It also intends to respond to Elon Musk's Starlinkjust likeintroducing of Galileo Project in response to U.S’ GPS.  The EU has proved that Starlink is an essential means of communication for future wars through the Ukrainian war. However, StarLink aims to have a total of 42,000 satellites in the long run,still not enough for the EU to compete with StarLink.  IRIS2 will cover Europe and Africa and provide high-speed Internet services.It will be used as a backup system to provide uninterrupted Internet services in the event of current Internet problems.  In this regard, Thierry Breton, an executive committee member, explained that various procurement projects will be launched to carry out the project.The first satellite will be launched in 2024, and the full service in 2027.  Incase of IRIS2-related procurement projects, very strict selection criteria will be imposed.30% of the projects must be participated by start-ups and SMEs.

• Land satellite images are provided for earthquake recovery in Turkey

    The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said they are continuously providing satellite images using multipurpose practical satellites and next-generation heavy satellites to support Turkey earthquake damage.  The Ministry of Science and ICT's multipurpose practical satellites 3, 3A, and 5 have joined the International Charter 'Space and Major Disasters'for international disaster response cooperation and are providing satellite images.   In addition, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to provide satellite images to charter from the first half of 2023 to contribute to disaster relief activities around the world.   In response to the earthquake in Turkey, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it has provided images of earthquake-damaged areas to the charter at least once a day from 5 p.m. (local time) on February 7, and will provide satellite images sequentially in the future. Furthermore, the results of the video analysis of the multi-purpose practical satellite No. 3 in the Antakya area on February 10 were delivered to the National Fire Agency to support the activities of the Korean Emergency Relief Team.   The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said it will provide images of the earthquake-stricken areas taken by the next-generation medium-sized satellite 1 to request agencies such as the Ministry of National Defense, the Fire Agency and the Turkish government from 10:48 a.m. (local time) on Feb. 11.  Kim Ki-seok, head of the space technology division of the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, "We will contribute to the international community by continuously providing video footage of the affected areas through cooperation between all ministries and links with the next-generation medium-sized satellite No. 1 used by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport."

• Endangered Species Protected by Overseas Greenhouse Gas Reduction announced with Commemorative Stamp

    The Korea Forest Service announced on the 10th that a 2023 commemorative stamp was issued to introduce four endangered species protected through overseas greenhouse gas reduction activities (REDD+) promoted by Cambodia.  The commemorative stamp introduces four species: Manis javanica, Chrotogaleoustoni, Indochypithecusgermaini, and Hylobates palatus, which were protected through the Red Plus project in Kampung Tom Province, Cambodia.  Since 2015, the Korea Forest Service has reduced 650,000 tons of greenhouse gases in September 2020 through a pilot project of Red Plus (REDD+) implemented in Kampung Tom Province, Cambodia, and has been conducting continuous inspection (monitoring) activities so far.  The Red Plus pilot project is significant not only in reducing greenhouse gases, but also in contributing to Cambodia's forest conservation. It improves the lifequalityof local residents and biodiversity.  In particular, it has contributed to the preservation of 91 species of biodiversity in the site, of which two species of birds and nine species of mammals are endangered species designated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).  Commemorative stamps can be purchased by visiting the post office or through the Internet post office.  "ReDD+ is an effective natural-based solution that can solve various problems facing mankind, such as joint response to climate change, conservation of biodiversity, and improving the lifequalityof local residents," saidan overseas resource officer.

GreatCompany & Global Leader’ 대상은 글로벌시대를 선도하는 선구자적 퍼스트무버 창조적 글로벌 리더에게 수여하는 상이다. 동북아외교안보포럼은 국민 삶의 질 향상과 관련 분야의 국가백년대계를 완성하는 혁신 국가발전 세계 1등의 기초를 다짐으로써 글로벌외교안보ㆍ경제산업발전에 기여한 공로를 높이 평가 받았다. 동북아외교안보포럼은 인도태평양 지역의 안보 경제 여건의 급격한 변화에 주목하고 한미동맹에 대한 관성적인 의존이나 북한에 대한 비합리적이고 일방적인 친밀감에 터 잡은 안보전략에서 벗어나 변화하는 안보환경에 부응하는 실리 추구적 외교안보 정책을 제시하고 역내 주요 국가와의 외교활동에서 대한민국의 국익을 극대화할 수 있도록 국민적 여론을 형성하는데 기여하는 것을 목적으로 설립됐다. 특히 외교안보 영역에서 대한민국이 인도태평양 지역은 물론 전세계적으로도 경제적 위상에 걸맞는 주요 행위자로서 위상을 확고히 할 수 있는 비전을 제시하기 위해 다양한 활동을 벌이고 있다. 최지영 이사장은 “강한 안보는 국가의 안녕을 보장하는 가장 기본적이고 핵심적인 요건이고 정치와 행정은 이를 잘 뒷받침하여 국민의 안전과 행복을 지켜주는 역할을 수행해야 한다”면서 “포럼은 정국이 미래에 대한 고민이나 토론이 보이지 않고 개척 정신도 부족함을 채우고, 글로벌시대에 맞게 나라가 바로 설 수 있도록 대안을 제시하는 역할을 하고자 한다”고 말했다. 또한 그는 "북핵 위협 뿐만 아니라 한반도를 둘러싼 여러 가지 정세의 변화는 대한민국의 미래에 상당히 위협적이고 이것은 우리가 직시해야 할 현실이다”면서 “추상적인 선의 실현 보다는 구체적인 악을 제거하는 데 주력해야 한다. 정치적인 수단으로 행복을 만들려 하지 말고.  구체적인 여러 비참한 사태에 제거를 목표로 하는 게 건강하고 행복한 미래를 위한 세상이라 생각한다”고 말했다. 동북아외교안보포럼은 올해 1월 10일 “대한민국 안보의 미래 핵이 답이다”를 주제로 토론회를 주최했으며, 2월 15일에는 ‘한국의 독자적 핵무장과 한미동맹 강화’를 주제로 두 번째 토론회를 개최하고, 한국의 잠재적 핵보유 능력 확보가 한미동맹의 공동전력 증대를 통해 북핵 억제는 물론 동북아의 평화와 안정에 어떻게 기여할 수 있는지를 논의하는 시간을 마련했다. 이날 토론회에서 최 이사장은 "한국이 대외적으로 인정받을 수준의 잠재적 핵보유 능력을 획득하기까지는 이를 위한 단계적 절차를 장기적으로 추진함과 동시에 한미 간 확장억제의 강화와 실제적인 운용을 대외적으로 명확히 보여줌으로써 북한의 도발 의지를 선제적으로 억제하는 것이 절대적으로 필요하다"고 강조했다． 또한 포럼은 4~6월 중에는 많은 사람들이 어렵고 멀게 느끼는 외교, 안보 문제를 쉽고 가깝게 접할 수 있도록 ‘동북아외교안보아카데미’를 준비하고 있다. 한편 최지영 이사장은 미국의 U.C. Berkeley에서 정치학과를 졸업하고 잠시 영어와 스페인어 동시통역을 하다가 대한민국 국회에서 당시 한나라당 제16대 이상희 국회의원실을 거쳐 제17대 박찬숙 국회의원실에서 근무했다. 이후 학교폭력대책자치위원장, 주민자치위원, 서초 다산장학재단 등 학교와 지역사회를 중심으로 꾸준히 봉사활동과 한국여성유권자연맹 중앙이사, 한국여성단체협의회 차세대국가발전기획위원장 등 사회단체활동을 진행했으며, 자유한국당 서초을 차세대위원장, 중앙여성위원회 부위원장, 과학기술정보통신위원회 정책자문위원 등 당직을 두루 거친 후 현재 국민의힘 중앙차세대위원장을 역임 중이다.

• UAM, the next-generation transportation, supports Busan's bid for the 2030 World Expo.

      The 2030 Busan World Expo Hosting Committee signed a 'UAM Business Cooperation MOU' with SK Telecom, Hanwha System, Korea Airports Corporation, and T-Map Mobility to host the 2030 Busan World Expo.  In a bid plan submitted to the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) on September 7, the bidding committee proposed a plan to utilize future transportation systems such as UAM for the convenience of visitors at the 2030 Busan World Expo.  UAM is a next-generation urban air transportation method that operates with eco-friendly energy based on advanced ICT technologies such as AI and autonomous driving. It is also consistent with the main and subtitle of the 2030 Busan World Expo in that it solves social problems such as environmental problems and traffic congestion.  The main content of this agreement is cooperation in attracting promotional activities using UAM simulators for domestic and foreign exhibition events such as BIE Field Survey (4.3-7), Climate Industry International Fair (5.24-27, BEXCO), and MWC (Spain).  The agreement agency plans to create a enthusiasm for attracting the 2030 Busan World Expo to the public, while showing Korea's technology in the UAM field to the world, drawing differentiation from competitors such as Saudi Arabia.  Yoon Sang-jik, secretary-general of the bid committee, said, "The convenient transportation infrastructure of Busan, the host city, is the most powerful strength of the 2030 Busan World Expo," adding, "The hosting activities using UAM will effectively show Korea's technology and commitment to realizing the carbon-neutral expo."  In addition, each agreement agency expressed its willingness to support all-out hosting activities through local surveys and global exhibitions by utilizing UAM-related content.  In the future, the bid committee plans to make all efforts to attract Busan through cooperation with various companies in deciding the venue for the 2030 World Expo at the end of November this year.

• Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) World Food Price Index down0.8%

      According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Price Index in January 2023 recorded 131.2 points, down 0.8% from the previous month (132.2 points). Grain prices rose slightly, but prices fell for all other items.  In January 2023, the grain price index recorded 147.4 points, up 0.1% from 147.3 points in December 2022. Wheat fell in price as production increased compared to expectations in Australia and Russia.Corn prices rose due to strong demand for Brazilian corn and concerns over drought in Argentina, despite the decline in U.S. corn export prices.Rice prices rose on the back of rising domestic demand and the exchange rate in some Asian exporters.  In the case of oil and fat prices, it was 140.4 points, down 2.9% from the previous month (144.6 points). Palm oil prices fell as demand for imports slowed as major importers recently secured large inventories. Soybean oil prices fell due to falling prices of other oils and fats and improved climate conditions in Argentina. The prices of rape seed oil and sunflower seed oil fell as export volume was sufficiently supplied.  In the case of meat, it was 113.6 points, down 0.1% from the previous month (113.7 points). Beef prices fell, especially in Australia and New Zealand, as the supply of cattle for slaughter increased. Despite of the spreading avian influenza, the price of poultry meat fell as the exportable volume of major countries continued to increase. Pork was supplied sufficiently in Brazil and the United States, and China's demand for imports for the Spring Festival was lower than expected, causing prices to fall.  In the case of dairy products, it was 136.2 points, down 1.4% from the previous month (138.2 points). Butter market demand slowed as prices were expected to continue to fall, and prices fell as supply from Australia and New Zealand also increased. Dry whole milk fell in price due to weak demand from major importers and increased supply from New Zealand, and skimmed milk fell due to overall slowing demand. On the other hand, cheese prices rose slightly in Western Europe due to the recovery in demand for dining out and retailing because of the New Year holiday.  In the case of sugar, it was 115.8 points, down 1.1% from the previous month (117.2 points). The main factors were the smooth harvest in Thailand and the improvement in production conditions due to good climate effects in Brazil. However, the drop was not significant because of concerns over low yields in India, rising gasoline prices in Brazil, increased demand for ethanol, and a strong Brazilian real currency.

• Korean Mask Dance is listed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

    The 17th Intergovernmental Committee of the UNESCO Intangible Heritage Protection Convention (11.28-12.3) held in Rabat, Morocco, finally decided to list "Korean Mask Dance" on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.  The UNESCO Intangible Heritage Committee praised the value of universal equality and criticism of the social status system emphasized by "Korean Mask Dance" as still a meaningful topic today and plays a symbolic role in each region's cultural identity.   In particular, out of total of 46 applications for registration on the agenda, the"Korean Mask Dance" was evaluated as an exemplary case that clearly described the social function and cultural meaning of intangible heritage.  ‘AndongHahoeByeolsingutTalnori’ and ‘YecheonCheongdannori’ were highly praised for their comprehensive traditional art that advocated universal equality and sublimated the contradiction of the class system into dance, song, and play. It is important that it has been recognized as an excellent universal value for its faithfulness to the role of social criticism as a symbolic element of the cultural identity of theregion.  As a result, Andong has become a historical city with five world heritages, including Korea's historical village (Hahoe Village), SanjiSeungwon (Bongjeongsa Temple), Seowon (Dosanseowon, Byeongsanseowon), and Talchum (HahoebyeolSingutTalnori). Yecheon also achieved its first world heritage.  The UNESCO listing of "Korean Mask Dance" is a good example of the collaboration of the Cultural Heritage Administration, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andong City, North Gyeongsang Province, and five municipal and provincial intangible cultural conservation organizations and the World Federation of Culture and Arts.  With this registration, Korea has a total of 22 UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and will continue to make efforts to promote cultural diversity and human creativity in accordance with the UNESCO Intangible Heritage Protection Convention.

• Domestic medical team prove the world's first anti-stress effect of exercise

    A research team led by Professor Park Ki-soo of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at Korea University Ansan Hospital proved the anti-stress effect of exercise for the first time in the world through a nuclear medicine video.  Stress is cited as a major risk factor for all diseases, including neurotic ulcers and cardiovascular disease, and it is known that obese people, in particular, have higher stress levels than those who do not. In addition, exercise is known to relieve stress, but there was no objective video data to prove it.  The research team imaged and quantified "amygdala activity," a cerebral area that controls stress responses in obese women and normal people, through a nuclear medical imaging technique, "18F-FDG PET/CT," They finally confirmed that the activity of amygdala increased by about 1.5 times compared to normal people. This shows that the stress level of obese women is higher than that of normal people.  Furthermore, the activity of the amygdala decreased by about 20% after aerobic and muscle resistance exercise were performed for three months in obese women. While the activity of the amygdala decreased, the body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and blood pressure also decreased significantly.  Professor Park Ki-soo said, "This study is the world's first study to prove the anti-stress effect of exercise through objective images. Nuclear medical images are highly valuable as a stress evaluation index in various clinical treatment strategies."  The research paper was published in the latest issue of the international journal "Frontiers in Endocrinology."

• President Yoon Suk Yeol visits the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich

      President Yoon Suk Yeol visited the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, on the afternoon of January 19 (local time) and had a "conversation with quantum scholars."  The conversation was designed to listen to trends in quantum technology development through dialogue with experts in quantum fields at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, a world-renowned research institute. The president intends to explore strategies to become a game changer in the next decade.  President Yoon said that interest in quantum fields is increasing, with the2022 Nobel Prize winners in Physics being produced from quantum technology researchers. He also emphasized that quantum technology is coming to bloom with great interest from each country and company.   President Yoon stressed that Korea has the capability to quickly secure technology while reducing trial and error based on its R&D experience. Korean government will make efforts to contribute to the desirable future development of mankind in the international community through solidarity and cooperation with countries around the world.    Furthermore, the president's office mentioned that thediscussed topic with quantum scholars will be reflected and announced in the ‘national quantum strategy,’ currently being established by the government.  Prior to the conversation, President Yoon was guided by the vice president of the Swiss Federal University of Technology. He introduced Einstein's life and achievements andvarious collection. The Library of the Federal University of Technology in Zurich is the world's best university library with 7.8 million books and artifacts, including Einstein's academic records, notes, and letters exchanged with colleagues.
