• Overseas Consuls General Meeting Discusses Global Multilateral Diplomacy

    The Overseas Consuls General Meeting in 2024 concluded with a final topic discussion on the morning of April 25th, centering on "Global Multilateral Diplomacy." The session saw the participation of Kang In-sun, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, alongside the consuls general. The discussion was structured into three parts, each addressing crucial aspects of international relations.   In the first segment, emphasis was placed on enhancing contributions to international peace and security by elevating democratic standards and engaging in activities within the UN Security Council. This included exploring avenues for expanding Korea's role in promoting global stability.    Vice Minister Kang, in her opening remarks, underscored the significance of Korea's multilateral diplomacy amidst geopolitical and geoeconomic shifts. She urged a thoughtful consideration of goals, stressing the consul general's crucial role in realizing Korea's ambition as a global pivotal state.    During the subsequent session, Kwon Ki-hwan, Director-General for Multilateral Diplomacy, highlighted Korea's commitment to strengthening international solidarity based on universal values like democracy and human rights. He outlined plans for Korea to play a more active role in global affairs during its upcoming term on the UN Security Council.    In the following segment, Kim Hee-sang, Director-General for Economic Diplomacy, outlined the government's vision on key global economic issues, including supply chains, digitalization, AI, climate, and energy. He discussed Korea's strategies for engagement within major multilateral economic forums such as the G7, G20, APEC, and OECD.    In the final session, Kwon Ki-hwan reiterated the importance of effective implementation of global South diplomacy by Korea through initiatives like advanced-country-type Official Development Assistance (ODA) and strengthening strategic partnerships with major donor countries.    The topic discussions served as a platform to share Korea's vision and contributions to the international community, gather insights from the consul general, and propose policies to bolster Korea's role as a "global pivotal state" in multilateral diplomacy. 

• 2024 World Climate Industry EXPO to be Jointly Hosted by South Korea and the International Energy Agency

    The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy of South Korea and the International Energy Agency (IEA) have announced their plans to jointly host the 2024 World Climate Industry Expo. This collaboration reflects a shared understanding of the urgent need for international cooperation in promoting zero-carbon energy solutions such as nuclear power, renewable energy, hydrogen, and carbon capture, storage, and utilization (CCUS) to address the global climate crisis and enhance energy security.  The World Climate Industry Expo, first established last year, integrates 30 domestic energy and environment exhibitions along with investment attraction events. The South Korean government has made efforts to facilitate this joint hosting with the IEA, including sending a letter from the Prime Ministerand holding a meeting with IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. With the active participation and guidance of the IEA, this year's expo is set to evolve into a truly international event.  The theme for this year's expo is "Opening the Era of Zero-Carbon Energy through Climate Technology," with a focus on discussions about accelerating the transition to sustainable clean energy. The expo is expected to serve as a global platform for advancing the spread of zero-carbon energy technologies and initiatives, following the agreements made at the UN Climate Change Conference last December.  IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol will deliver a keynote speech during the event and present the IEA's analysis of major energy technologies essential for achieving global climate goals. Professor James Bacchus is also set to give a keynote address. Major global companies such as Samsung, Hyundai Motors, Tesla, and Ørsted will showcase the latest and future technologies related to zero-carbon energy.  Lee Ho-hyeon, Director of Energy Policy, stated, "I welcome IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol's decision to co-host the expo for the spread of zero-carbon energy." He added, "We will work with the IEA to elevate the World Climate Industry Expo into a leading international event for addressing the climate crisis." 

• MDCP Holds 9th Operating Committee Meeting

    The 9th Operating Committee meeting of theMulti-agency Donor Coordination Platform for Ukraine (MDCP) took place in Kyiv, Ukraine, on April 10. The meeting was attended by Kang Seok-hee, South Korea’s government representative supporting Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts. This was the first in-person meeting since South Korea joined the MDCP in February 2023.  Major donor countries and institutions at the meeting expressed their unwavering support for Ukraine’s reconstruction and recovery efforts. They issued a joint statement outlining financial support direction for Ukraine for 2024-25. The statement emphasized contributions to Ukraine’s urgent recovery needs in 2024, such as protecting energy infrastructure and securing alternative power sources. Countries also agreed to launch a Business Advisory Council, composed of private enterprises, at the upcoming Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin in June 2024.  Attendees praised Ukraine’s commitment to reforms and efforts to secure sustainable economic growth. They highlighted the importance of enhancing the effectiveness of international support and expanding the participation of the private sector in the reconstruction and recovery process.  South Korea reiterated its commitment to supporting Ukraine through humanitarian aid and long-term reconstruction in areas such as infrastructure, healthcare, and education. This support aligns with the 'Ukraine Peace Solidarity Initiative' announced during President Yoon Seok-yeol's visit to Ukraine in July 2022.  The next MDCP Operating Committee meeting is scheduled to take place in Berlin in June during the Ukraine Recovery Conference.

• ASEAN-ROK Dialogue: Strengthening Partnerships and Addressing Regional Challenges

    The annual Deputy Ministerial Meeting between Korea and ASEAN countries, known as the 'ASEAN-ROK Dialogue,' convened on April 4th to assess the current state of cooperation and discuss future directions. This year marked the 35th anniversary of establishing the ASEAN-ROK dialogue relations, underscoring the significance of the occasion.    The dialogue aimed to establish the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), representing the highest level of partnership between Korea and ASEAN. It provided a platform to review the current state of Korean-ASEAN cooperation, exchange views on future development directions, and discuss regional and international situations.    In the opening remarks, Deputy Minister Chung Byung-won emphasized the importance of strengthening relations with ASEAN and the full-scale implementation of the Korean-ASEAN Solidarity Initiative (KASI). He highlighted strategic coordination, digital transformation, and climate change response as key areas for mutual cooperation.    The Deputy Minister elaborated on how the Korean-ASEAN Solidarity Initiative contributes to ASEAN's goal of building three pillars of community by 2025. He emphasized the need to expand cooperation in future industries such as digital technology, electric vehicles, and smart cities to enhance supply chain stability and resilience.    Participants also exchanged views on major regional and international issues, including the situation on the Korean Peninsula, developments in the South China Sea, the issue of Myanmar, the Israel-Hamas conflict, and the war in Ukraine.    ASEAN reaffirmed its support for Korea's North Korea policy, including its ‘Audacious Initiative.’ The dialogue concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthen partnerships and address regional challenges, underscoring the importance of cooperation between Korea and ASEAN in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.    Overall, the ASEAN-ROK Dialogue provided a valuable opportunity for both sides to deepen cooperation, enhance mutual understanding, and address shared challenges in the years ahead.  

• Convening the 3rd summit for democracy

    On March 18, 2024, the Korean government, alongside the governments of the United Kingdom, Ecuador, and the United States, co-hosted the Third Democracy Summit Ministerial Meeting in Seoul. Focused on the theme of 'AI/Digital Technology and Democracy,' the summit aimed to address the evolving intersection of technological innovation and democratic principles.  The Ministerial Meeting marked the initiation of the Third Democracy Summit, which spanned three days from March 18 to March 20, and drew over 400 participants. Among them were approximately 30 government officials at the ministerial and vice-ministerial level, representatives from diplomatic corps stationed in Korea, as well as individuals from civil society, industry, and academia.  In the welcoming remarks, President Yoon Suk-yeol underscored the pivotal role of democracy in Korea's journey, rooted in universal values such as freedom, human rights, and the rule of law. He expressed Korea's commitment to sharing its democratic development experience with the global community through the Summit.  Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yeol, in his opening speech, highlighted the significance of technological innovation amid global democratic challenges. He emphasized the intertwined nature of artificial intelligence, digital technology, and democracy, acknowledging both the opportunities and challenges.  Throughout the Ministerial Meeting, representatives from participating governments emphasized the imperative for democratic nations to exchange policies and experiences concerning digital technology's impact on democracy. They stressed the need for collaborative efforts to harness the benefits of digital innovation while safeguarding democratic values.   The meeting facilitated comprehensive discussions on the implications of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence and digital technology for future generations' democracy. It served as a platform for fostering international consensus on the responsible use of emerging technologies in alignment with democratic principles.  

• Enhancing International Cooperation for Research on Emerging Infectious Disease Response among Korea, U.S., and Japan

      The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) and the National Institute of Health (NIH), under the leadership of Director Park Hyun-young and Director Jang Hee-chang respectively, have announced the forthcoming 2024 International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases in the Pacific Rim (EID). Scheduled to take place from March 5th to 8th, the event will span four days and will be hosted at the Grand Hyatt Incheon Hotel.    This collaborative effort is spearheaded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of the United States, in partnership with the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) and the Korea National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID). Additionally, the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) will participate as a partner institution.   The conference will commence with welcoming remarks from Director General Ji Young-mi of the KCDC, Dr. Diane Griffin, a Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and Dr. Hiroshi Kiyono from Chiba University. The overarching theme of the conference will revolve around "Rapid Emergence of Pathogens Due to Climate Change and Pandemic Preparedness."    As an integral part of the event, the NIID will organize the 2nd International Symposium for Infectious Diseases Research Institutes Cooperation (IDRIC) on March 8th, aimed at bolstering collaboration among domestic and international research institutions.    Under the theme "Current Status and Rapid Development Strategies for Vaccine and Therapeutics Development against Pandemic Preparedness," IDRIC will feature discussions focusing on the development of vaccines and treatments in response to the "Government-wide Mid-to-Long-Term Plan for Preparedness against Emerging Infectious Diseases."    Director Jang Hee-chang of the NIID expressed, "We plan to enhance close cooperation with domestic and international institutions and companies by developing treatments and vaccines for emerging infectious diseases in cooperation with the United States, Japan, and others, and upgrading infrastructure, such as establishing a national advanced vaccine development center."

    Q. 고려대학교 산업경영공학부는?   A. 산업경영공학부에서는 하나의 분야를 집중적으로 배우는 것이 아닌, 인공지능, 데이터마이닝, 프로그래밍 및 행정학, 경영학 등 다양한 분야를 폭 넓게 배우고 이런 산업들을 어떻게 활용하면 최적의 효율을 낼 수 있는지 연구합니다. 이러한 연구를 통해 얻은 폭넓은 시야와 열린 사고를 바탕으로 4차 산업혁명 시대에 적합한 인재를 키워내는 것을 목표로 하는 학과입니다.   Q. 졸업 후의 진로는 어떻게 나뉘는 편입니까?   A.대부분 스타트업, 창업을 하는 편이고, 굳이 창업하지 않더라도 학과 내에서 다양한 분야를 골고루 배우기 때문에 IT나 에너지, 마케팅 등 분야를 가리지 않고 취업을 합니다.   Q. 본교 산업경영공학부만의 특별한 문화나 행사가 있습니까?   A.‘최적의 밤’이라는 행사가 있습니다. 저희 학과의 별명이 ‘최적반’인데, ‘최적의 밤’은 우리 최적반의 졸업하여 사회로 나간 OB 선배 분들을 모셔서 재학생들과 만남의 장을 여는 행사입니다. OB 분들 중에는 현재 회사를 이끌고 계신 분도 있고, 대기업에 취직하신 분, 공문원을 하고 계신 분들 등등 다양한 분야에서 성공하신 분들의 이야기를 가까운 곳에서 직접 들을 수 있어 졸업 후 진로를 정하는 데에도 많이 도움이 되고 학교생활에 대한 팁이나 본인들이 살면서 얻은 깨달음을 아낌없이 전달해주셔서 대학생들에게 유익함이 아주 큰 행사입니다.   Q. 입학을 위해 준비해두면 좋은 것이 있습니까? 본인만의 입시 팁을 주자면?   A. 일단 가장 중요한건 누가 뭐래도 공부입니다. 특히 국어, 영어, 수학, 과학은 초, 중, 고등학교 때 공부한 내용들이 대학교 수업 내용과도 연관이 매우매우 크기 때문에 미리미리 공부를 열심히 해두지 않으면 대학와서도 수업에 적응하기 힘들겁니다. 사실 입시에 관해서는 딱 하나만 기억하면 됩니다. ‘남들보다 한 발만 더’. 항상 남들보다 한 발 일찍 출발해서 한 발 늦게 들어가는 의지가 중요해요. 남들과 똑같이 해서는 남들보다 성공할 수 없습니다. 많은 것을 요구하지 않습니다. 딱 한 발만 더 가면 됩니다. 그 사소한 차이들이 모여 나중에 분명 여러분을 성공으로 이끌어 줄 것입니다.   Q. 미래의 후배들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있습니까?   A. 공부하기 많이 힘들죠? 세상엔 뭐이리 재밌는 일들이 많은지 공부만 하려고 하면 재밌는 것들이 나를 막 방해하고, 살면서 별로 쓸데도 없는 것 같은 내용을 왜 공부하고있어야하나 싶고...사실 공부를 해야하는 목적은 여러분에게 시련을 주려는 겁니다. 힘들고 어려운 상황에 처했을 때 여러분이 얼마나 끈기있고 열심히 노력하는지를 보는거죠. 그 시련을 버티고 고개를 들었을 땐 여러분이 이전까지는 경험도 못해봤을 재미있는 일들이 여러분을 기다리고 있을 겁니다. 제가 그랬거든요ㅎㅎ. 그러니 여러분!     힘들어도 포기하지 말고 우리 열심히 살아보자구요! 고려대학교에서 여러분을 기다리고 있겠습니다.

• 리더스타임즈 진로진학탐방 - 계명대학교 의예과

    Q. 계명대학교 의예과는? A. 계명대학교 의과대학은 1899년 북장로교 의료선교사 존슨(Woodbridge O.Jonson)에 의해 설립된 제중원이 모태가 되어 영남권 초기 서양의술을 시작한 역사를 가지고 있습니다.  1978년 종합대학 '계명대학교'로 승격한 이후 1980년 동산기독병원과 통합하여 의과대학을 신설하여 지금에 이르고 있습니다. 2010년 계명대학교 성서캠퍼스로 이전 하였고 대구 지하철 2호선 강창역 근처에 학과 건물이 위치해 있습니다. 의과대학 건물과 계명대학교 동산병원이 연결되어 있어 본과 3학년 때부터 시작되는 실습 수업은 동산병원에서 진행하게 됩니다.   Q. 졸업 후의 진로는 어떻게 나뉘는 편입니까? A. 본과 4학년 동안 치르는 국가고시에 합격하면 졸업과 함께 의사 면허를 부여받을 수 있습니다. 이후의 진로는 여러 가지로 나뉘게 되는데, 현재 학생들이 가장 흔히 선택하는 것은 수련병원에서 인턴-전공의 등의 수련과정을 거치는 것입니다. 이 외에도 일차 진료를 보는 일반의, 연구를 중점으로 하는 기초의학 교수 등이 있습니다. 수련 과정을 거친 후에는 크게 대학병원에 남아 교수로서 후학 양성에 기여하거나, 2차병원/개원가로 나가 환자 진료를 보는 경우가 많습니다.   Q. 본교 의예과만의 특별한 문화나 행사가 있습니까? A. 계명대학교 의예과는 선후배 간의 교류를 위한 기회를 많이 열어두는 편입니다. 입학 당시 예과 2학년과 신입생을 한 명씩 매칭하여 학교 생활에 도움을 줄 수 있도록 합니다. 이외에도 동문회, 동아리, 교실원(쉽게 말하면 과목 도우미) 간 모임을 주기적으로 가집니다. 또한 의과대학 동아리마다 개최하는 신입생 환영 공연과 정기공연을 통해 학창 시절의 소중한 추억을 만들 수 있습니다. 의예과만의 특별한 행사로는 해부제를 꼽고 싶습니다. 인체를 공부하는 의예과 특성상 학생들의 교육을 위해 시신을 기증해 주시는 분들이 계십니다. 해부제는 그러한 분들의 숭고한 뜻을 기리기 위한 행사이며, 공부할 수 있는 기회를 주심에 감사드림과 함께 생명의 무거움을 느낄 수 있는 아주 중요한 행사라고 생각합니다.   Q. 입학을 위해 준비해두면 좋은 것이 있습니까? 본인만의 입시 팁을 주자면? A. 제가 입학한 지는 시간이 꽤 지나 현재의 입시와는 다소 거리가 있을지 모르나, 제가 후배님들께 드리고 싶은 말씀은 ‘현재에 집중하라’입니다. 누가‘고3은 공부를 가장 많이 하는 시기가 아니라, 공부에 대한 걱정을 가장 많이 하는 시기다’라고 하더라고요. 수험생 기간이 길고 힘드실 것 압니다. 까마득한 미래를 떠올리면 불안해지는 게 당연하므로, 오늘 내가 당장 할 수 있는 것에 집중하시면 좋겠습니다. 달리기에 비유하면 마라톤을 종점까지 내리 달리는 건 힘들지만, 짧은 스퍼트를 주기적으로 내는 게 더 효율적일 수 있다는 뜻입니다. 수능이 가까워질수록 그 스퍼트를 조금씩 더 자주, 더 길게 내면 좋겠죠. 저는 아주 특별한 사람들만이 의과대학에 간다고 생각하지 않습니다. 공부도 재능이라고들 하지만, 저는 그 노력과 끈기가 더 주요하다고 생각합니다. 그리고 그건 마음먹기에 따라 정말 누구나 할 수 있어요.   Q. 미래의 후배들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있습니까? A. 우선 입학을 진심으로 축하드립니다. 저마다 과정은 달라도, 입학하기 위해 학창시절에 얼마나 노력하셨을지 알기에 고생하셨다는 말을 해드리고 싶습니다. 신입생 때 마음껏 성취를 즐기고, 동기/선배들과 좋은 추억 쌓으셨으면 좋겠습니다. 학교를 다니다 보면 자신 있던 공부가 힘들게 느껴지고, 똑똑한 동기들을 보며 위축되는 순간들이 있을 수 있습니다. 흔히들 겪는 경험이니 너무 걱정 마세요. 여러분은 지금까지 노력하여 성과를 이뤄봤기 때문에 충분히 해낼 수 있습니다. 주위의 동기들은 6년이란 시간동안 여러분이 서로 배우고 함께 성장할 수 있는 최고의 파트너가 될 것입니다. 동기들과 함께 의지하며 즐거운 학교생활 하시길 응원하겠습니다.

    Q. 이화여자대학교 중어중문학과는?   A. 전 세계 인구의 약 20%를 차지하고 있는 나라의 언어, 중국어의 언어는 선택사항일까요? 중국어 사용인구는 많을 뿐만 아니라 중국은 현재 세계에서 가장 빠른 속도로 발전해나가고 있습니다. 세계 각국의 기업들은 중국 시장에 뛰어들고 있으며, 세계는 중국과 교류해야 합니다. 이화여자대학교 중어중문학과는 한자문화권(漢字文化圈)의 문화적 원천이라 일컬을 수 있는 중국의 언어와 문화의 교수에 중점을 두면서 또한 중국문학이 경학 · 사학 등의 일반 학술 사상과 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있으므로 언어 · 문화 · 역사 · 철학 등의 분야와 연계시켜 수학할 수 있는 교과 과정을 마련하고 있습니다.     Q. 졸업 후의 진로는 어떻게 나뉘는 편입니까?   A. 중어중문학과 학생들은 졸업 후 대학원 진학 및 중국학 연구를 위한 중국어권/영어권으로 유학을 하거나 취업을 합니다. 이 중 취업의 경우, 대기업, 출판/기업/금융계, 외국 공관/정부 각 기관/국회, 번역사, 통역사 등 등 여러 분야에서 자신의 재능을 발휘할 수 있습니다. 현재 중화권에서는 많은 중국 기업들이 한국 기업과 협력하고 있으며, 중국 시장을 겨냥하여 진출하는 기업도 증가하는 추세로 중문과 출신 인재의 활동 범위도 다양화되고 있습니다.물론 ‘교직이수’ 과정을 밟아서 교수/중국어 교사 등 교육 방면에서도 활약할 수 있습니다.  + 취득자격증 HSK 5급, 6급     Q. 본교 중어중문과만의 특별한 문화나 행사가 있나요?   A. 첫 번째, 중어권 해외 학교와의 활발한 교류 프로그램입니다. 북경대학(北京大学), 복단대학(复旦大学)과 협약. 그 중 학부생 대상(2학년 이상)으로 8학기 중 한 학기 동안 상해 복단대학교에 파견하는 PAGUS 해외학기 프로그램은 수준 높은 외국어 집중교육을 시키는 해외 수학 프로그램으로서, 본교 등록금의 80%를 장학금으로 지급 운영하고 있습니다. 두 번째, 중문인들만을 위한 독특한 동아리, 스터디그룹 자치활동이 있습니다. 중문인의 밤으로 매년 11월, 중국어 연극을 상연하고 교수님과 학생들이 교류하는 프로그램이 있습니다. 또한, 1박 2일로 진행된 글로벌 역량 강화 캠프로, 교내 학생들과 중국 유학생으로 구성되어 긴밀한 교류와 협동으로 한중문화를 깊이 있게 이해할 수 있습니다. 이 외에도 이화 중국어 토론대회, 중국 유학생 및 교환학생과의 교류, 중국어 원어 연극회, 중국 지역학 연구회 등 다양한 활동에서 자신의 재능과 꿈을 펼칠 수 있습니다.   Q. 입학을 위해 준비해두면 좋은 것이 있습니까? 본인만의 입시 팁을 주자면?   A. 중어중문학과는 말 그대로 언어와 문학을 배우는 학과입니다. 그러니, 중국어와 중국 문화에 관심이 많은 학생이라면 누구나 흥미롭게 수업을 따라올 수 있을 것 같습니다. 중어중문학과에 오기 위해서 반드시 준비해야만 하는 것은 없습니다. 입학하게 된다면 한국어 수업뿐만아니라 원어(중국어)수업과 해외수업이 활발히 이루어지고 있기 떄문에 대학생활을 하면서도 충분히 중국어 실력을 증진시킬 수 있습니다. 하지만 고등학교 시절 중국어를 조금이나마 배우고 입학한다면 다른 학우들보다는 조금 더 수월하게 수업을 들을 수 있을 것 같습니다. 이화에서 배우고자 하는 열정이 넘치는 학생들, 벗들이라면 중어중문학과에서 본인이 원하는 큰 성과를 이뤄낼 수 있을 것이라고 생각합니다.       Q. 미래의 후배들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있습니까?   A. 공부.. 정말 하기 싫었고 왜 해야하는지 이해가 안 가는 행동이었습니다. 공부를 하다 보면 항상 즐거울 수는 없습니다. 계속, 그리고 매일매일 똑같은 자리에서 공부 또 공부를 하다 보면 힘들 때, 포기하고 싶을 때가 정말 많을 겁니다. 하지만 공부는 흔히 ‘엉덩이 싸움’이라고 합니다. 단지 말 그대로 오래 앉아 있는 것만이 공부를 잘하는 게 아니라 힘들더라도 오래 앉아 있으면서도 공부하고 있는 그 순간에 집중하는 게 공부를 잘하는 것이라고 생각합니다. 즉, 엉덩이 힘과 ‘독기’가 필요한 것 같습니다!!   지금 당장, 1년 또는 그 이상을 더 공부한다고 생각하면 너무 길어서 언제 끝나나 싶고 다른 친구들은 다 놀러가고 더 재미있는 거, 더 좋은 거를 한다거나, sns 스토리를 넘겨보면서 ‘나는 뭐 하고 있나’ 라는 생각이 들겁니다. 하지만, 긴 일생에서 1년, 그 이상의 시간은 정말 작고 금방 흘러가는 시간이며 여러분의 인생을 위해 그 정도의 시간을 투자한다고 생각하셨으면 좋겠습니다! 훗날, 여러분의 상황은 더 좋아질 것이고 작년보다 더 성장한 여러분으로 바뀌어 있을지도 모르니까요.   그리고 주변에서 뭐라고 하든 여러분을 잘 모르고 하는 이야기이니 그냥 여러분이 세운 여러분만의 그 길로 가시면 됩니다!!! 소위, “마이웨이”요. 그러니까 여러분이 생각한 대로, 계획한 대로 하세요. 그 순간의 여러분의 선택이 그 당시의 선택들 중에서 가장 좋은, 최선의 선택이었을 테니까요 :)

      Q. 연세대학교   화학과는? A. 물, 소금, 설탕, 다이아몬드, 나무, 유리, 플라스틱, 비닐 등등 우리 주변의 물질들은 무엇으로 이루어져 있으며 어떻게 만들어졌을까요? 화학이란 세상을 이루고 있는 다양한 물질들의 구조, 그러한 물질들이 갖는 성질, 그들 사이의 반응과 변화를 다루는 학문으로, 화학과는 화학이라는 분야를 깊게 학습하는 학과입니다. 물질을 이루는 기본 성분인 ‘원소’들 사이의 결합을 통해 수많은 물질이 만들어지고 서로 다른 물질이 만나 새로운 물질로 바뀐다는 사실을 화학의 4대 분야(유기화학, 무기화학, 물리화학, 분석화학)에 걸쳐서 공부한다고 생각하시면 됩니다.   Q. 졸업 후의 진로는 어떻게 나뉘는 편입니까? A. 화학과 학생들은 졸업 후 대학원에 진학하거나 취업을 하는데, 이 중 취업의 경우 이과 계열에서 가장 많은 분야로 나아갈 수 있는 학과가 바로 화학과입니다. 화학을 기반으로 하는 산업이 매우 많은 만큼 바이오/의약학/식품, 석유화학/화장품, 반도체/배터리/신소재 등의 공업 계열로 나아갈 수 있습니다. 물론 저와 같이 ‘교직 이수’과정을 통해 과학교사 및 강사가 될 수도 있습니다.   Q. 본교 화학과만의 특별한 문화나 행사가 있습니까? A. 연세대학교 화학과에는 사진 찍을 때 대표적인 포즈가 하나 있습니다. 바로 벤젠 포즈인데요, 벤젠(C₆H₆)은 화학과에서 아주 중요하게 배우는 물질 중 하나로, 1군 발암 물질이라 아주 위험하지만 우리 주변의 수많을 물질을 만들기 위한 기본 재료로 사용됩니다. 이러한 벤젠의 생김새가 정육각형의 고리 모양(⌬)이기 때문에 화학과 학생들은 사진을 찍을 때 양손을 주먹 쥔 채로 검지와 소지만 펴 양손의 손가락을 서로 닿게 하여 육각형을 만드는 포즈를 취합니다. 얼마나 유명하냐구요? 무려 작년 5월, 연세대학교 축제 아카라카에서 아이브(IVE)가 따라한 포즈라구요!   Q. 입학을 위해 준비해두면 좋은 것이 있습니까? 본인만의 입시 팁을 주자면? A. 화학과는 궁금증 많고 꼼꼼한 사람들에게 적합한 과인 듯싶습니다. 화학과에 오기 위해서 반드시 준비해야만 하는 것이 있거나 하지는 않지만, 단순히 고등학생 때 과학탐구 과목 중에 그나마 화학이 가장 괜찮았다고 화학과를 선택하는 것은 안 됩니다! 학교 공부를 넘어 화학 자체에 대한 호기심과 관심이 어느 정도 있어야 하며, 이러한 관심을 강연 청강, 독서, 검색 등을 통해 지식으로 변환하여 쌓아두어야 합니다. 많은 학생들이 “저 화학 좋아해요”, “이런 분야 신기해서 관심 있어요”라는 말은 하고 다니면서 정작 내용을 검색해봤다거나 찾아서 알게 되었다는 학생은 거의 없습니다. 관심에서 멈추지 않고 스스로 심화된 지식을 탐구하려고 해야 합니다. 그게 자연과학을 하려는 학생에게 가장 필요한 능력이고, 학생부종합전형을 정복할 수 있는 길입니다.   Q. 미래의 후배들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있습니까? A. 공부... 하기 싫죠? 사칙연산만 할 줄 알아도 사는 데 지장 없는데 수학을 뭘 이리 어려운 걸 배우나 싶고, 한국에서만 살 건데 영어 공부도 왜 해야 하는지 모르겠고... 저도 여러분과 같은 불평불만으로 중고등학생 시절을 보냈습니다. 그리고 성인이 된 지금에서야 그 공부의 뜻을 알아가는 것 같아요. 국어에서는 논리력을, 수학에서는 사고력을, 영어에서는 이해력을 가르치려는 목적이었구나 하고요. 지금 무엇을 하고 있는지, 왜 해야 하는지 모르겠다면 그 이유를 알게 될 때까지, 혹은 본인은 할 필요가 없다는 것을 깨달을 때까지는 일단 묵묵히 밀고 나가는 것이 중요합니다. 경험이 최고의 파트너입니다. • 농식품 해외 ‘안테나숍’, 케이-푸드(K-Food) 수출 영토 확대에 앞장서!

  해외 안테나숍 [리더스타임즈] 농림축산식품부는 올해 케이-푸드(K-Food) 100억불을 달성하고 중남미, 중동, 인도 등 신시장으로 수출 영토를 확대하기 위해 25개국 28개소에서 한국 농식품 ‘안테나숍’을 운영할 계획이다. 안테나숍은 한국 농식품의 인지도가 낮은 신규시장에 케이-푸드(K-Food) 전문 판매장을 운영하여 새로운 유통망을 개척하고 현지 소비자에게 우리 농식품의 인지도를 제고하기 위해 추진하는 사업이다. 안테나숍은 한국 농식품 전반을 취급하는 일반 안테나숍과 한국 신선 농산물을 전문으로 취급하는 케이-프레쉬 존(K-Fresh Zone, KFZ)으로 구성되어 있다. 일반 안테나숍은 2013년 처음으로 운영을 시작하였으며, 유럽, 중남미 등 한국 농식품 진출이 미미한 시장을 중심으로 신규 유통망을 개척해 오고 있다. 특히, 중남미 페루의 안테나숍은 연간 200만명 이상이 방문하는 세계적인 관광지 마추픽추로 가는 길목에 있어, 페루 소비자뿐만 아니라 전세계에서 온 관광객을 대상으로 케이-푸드(K-Food)를 홍보하고 있다. 이외에도 프랑스 대표 관광 도시 ‘니스’의 까르푸(Carrefour) 내 숍인숍, 영국 축구의 성지 ‘리버풀’ 중앙역 앞 등 유동인구가 많은 위치에 안테나숍을 운영하여 효과적으로 한국 농식품을 알리고 있다. 한편, 케이-프레쉬 존(K-Fresh Zone, KFZ)은 2017년 싱가포르를 시작으로 태국, 베트남 등으로 한국 신선 농산물 전문 유통망을 확대해 오고 있다. 특히, 2023년에는 아랍에미리트(UAE) 샤르자 지역에 케이-프레쉬 존(KFZ)을 최초로 개소하여 동남아 국가 위주로 집중되어 있던 신선 농산물 수출 시장을 다변화하고 있다. 올해는「케이-푸드 플러스(K-Food+) 수출 혁신 전략(’24.2)」에 따라 시장규모와 잠재력이 큰 3대 신시장(중동·중남미·인도)을 공략하고 수출을 확대하기 위해 안테나숍 총 28개소(계획) 중 12개소(중남미 5, 중동 4, 인도 3)를 신시장에서 운영할 계획이다. 농식품부 양주필 식품산업정책관은 “해외 안테나숍은 신규 수출시장의 유통망 개척부터 케이-푸드(K-Food) 홍보, 신규 바이어 발굴까지 다양한 역할을 하고 있다”라며, “안테나숍 이외에도 국제식품박람회 참가, 바이어초청 수출상담회 등 다양한 지원사업을 통해 3대 신시장을 개척하여 수출 영토를 확대해 나가기 위해 최선을 다하겠다”라고 말했다.

        [Leaders Times] Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome (STSS)      ∨ Invasive infection by Group A strep bacteria can cause STSS when they spread into the body.      ∨ According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the mortality rate for STSS is around 30~70%.     ∨ Recommend medical care to high-risk groups (adults 65 years old or older, diabetic patients, etc.) if they have possible symptoms, such as fever, rash, hypotension, etc.      ∨ Infection prevention (washing hands and cough etiquette) is essential.    ㆍ High-risk groups:    - Adults 65 years old or older     - Diabetic patient     - Case that injury caused by recent surgery     - Viral infection, which can occur in exposed wounds (Varicella)     - Alcoholism   ㆍPossible symptoms:     - High fever and Rash    - Hypotension (Low blood pressure)     - Tachypnea (Rapid breathing) and Dyspnea (Shortness of breath)     - Muscle aches    - Surgical site infections     - Edema      Symptoms, route of infections, and treatments   ㆍSign and symptoms:     - Early signs and symptoms: mild symptoms, such as sore throat, like influenza (flu) in the early      - STSS can develop into high fever, rash, Hypotension, Dyspnea, Necrotizing fasciitis, and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome       · Route of infection:    - Infection through mucous membrane and the part of wound     - Coughs and sneezes (respiratory droplets) spread viral infection.          · Treatment and vaccine:    - There are no vaccines for STSS    - Quick treatment at a medical facility is necessary when possible symptoms* come out     * High fever, Rash, Hypotension, Muscle aches, Surgical site infections, Edema, etc.      Prevent STSS  · Practice cough etiquette · Wash hands often   · Do not touch your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands  · Clean and cover wounds with a clean bandage  · See a doctor when possible symptoms occur  * (Suspicious symptoms) High fever, Rash, Hypotension, Muscle aches, Surgical site infections, Edema, etc.  · Recommendation of vaccination for Varicella and Influenza   *  Risk infections of Group A strep bacteria can increase because of infection of Varicella and Influenza           ※ Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome (STSS) is not defined as a legal infectious disease in Korea, but a medical facility operates sentinel surveillance through △ Epidemiological surveillance for patients with scarlet fever and △ Monitors acute respiratory infections (AirNet)!

    산업단지에서 배출하는 대기오염물질이 주변 도시에 미치는 영향 탐구 (철강, 항만, 발전소를 중심으로)   1. 탐구(연구) 동기  산업단지 주변의 대기 오염 물질 중 휘발성 유기 화합물과 미세먼지의 농도 분포의 상관관계를 알아보는 논문을 살펴보던 중 “다른 대기 오염 물질의 경우에는 산업단지 주변이 다른 지역보다 더 높은 농도가 나올까?”에 대한 궁금증이 생겨서 이 탐구를 진행하게 되었다.    2. 탐구(연구) 내용  가. 선행 연구 고찰 및 탐구의 독창성  선행연구에서는 선박이 항구에 접안하는 동안에만 측정하였고, 수도권 이외의 지역 발전소가 수도권에 영향을 미치는 정도가 정확한 수치로 비교되지 않았다. 그러나 이 탐구에서는 항구별 물류량으로 변경하여 측정 및 분석하였다. 또한 수도권 특정 지역 두 곳을 선정하여 정확한 수치를 계산 및 발전소 지역과 비교하였다.    나. 탐구 절차 및 방법  산업단지 주변 지역은 다른 지역과 거리가 있는 포항을, 항만은 국내 주요 도시이자 선박 통행량이 대체로 큰 부산, 인천, 광양, 여수, 울산을, 발전소 주변 도시로는 선행연구와 비슷한 지역인 태안, 당진 보령을, 수도권 지역의 영향을 받는 지역으로는 거리가 가까운 화성을, 받지 않는 지역으로는 거리가 먼 남양주를 선정하였다. 위 도시들의 대기오염물질 농도를 에어코리아 사이트를 통해 시간별로 수집해 하루 평균과 월평균 데이터를 계산 및 비교하였다. 항구도시의 경우에는 각 항만의 선박량을 2019년과 2020년으로 나누어 자료를 수집하였다.    다. 작품의 주요 내용  산업단지 주변 지역인 포항, 항만 지역으로 선정된 부산, 인천, 광양, 여수, 울산, 그리고 발전소 주변 도시인 태안, 당진, 보령, 수도권 지역 중 영향을 받는 지역으로 선정된 화성과 영향을 받지 않는 지역으로 선정된 남양주시 모두 이산화황, 미세먼지, 초미세먼지 등 대기 오염 물질 농도가 감소하였다.    3. 탐구(연구) 결과  포항 주변의 이산화황과 이산화질소 농도의 감소량은 2019년도에서 2020년도가 2020년도에서 2021년도보다 더 컸다. 항만의 경우에는 2020년도 부산항, 인천항, 광양항, 여수항, 울산항 중 여수항을 제외한 모든 항만이 선박의 입출항 수가 줄어들었다. 미세먼지와 초미세먼지 둘 다 부산, 인천, 광양, 여수, 울산에서 모두 감소하였다. 발전소 지역은 평균적으로 10% 이내의 비율로 미세먼지가 감소하였고, 화성도 마찬가지였다. 그러나 남양주는 최소 감소율이 13%에 육박하여 발전소에서 거리가 먼 지역은 영향을 많이 받지 않는다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.   <지 도>임미선,김민재(김포 가자교육컨설팅)

• Foreign Minister Park Jin Addresses APEC Foreign Affairs and Trade Meeting

    [Leaders Times] Foreign Minister Park Jin actively participated in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Joint Ministerial Meeting on Foreign Affairs and Trade, held in San Francisco, U.S., on Nov. 14. The discussions focused on devising strategies for fostering a sustainable and inclusive future in the Asia-Pacific region, addressing global challenges such as health crises, supply chain disruptions, and climate change.    Minister Park underscored the importance of establishing a robust network by strengthening both physical and human connectivity throughout the entire Asia-Pacific region. In his role as the leader of the 'Supply Chain Connectivity Framework Action Plan (SCFAP)' within APEC, Korea pledged to contribute to enhancing supply chain resilience in the region. This commitment involves initiatives related to customs procedures and cooperation projects for the digitization of supply chains. Minister Park expressed Korea's dedication to actively supporting the digitization of the APEC Enterprise Transportation Card (ABTC) and expanding inclusivity, particularly for women and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), to foster improved human connectivity.    Recognizing the necessity of increasing digital connectivity to achieve inclusive growth and bridge the digital gap in the region, Minister Park highlighted over 40 projects implemented through Korea's Digital Innovation Fund since 2019. These projects have contributed to the digital transformation of the region and bolstered the digital capabilities of developing countries. He urged APEC member countries to collaborate in establishing ethical norms for digital technology, aiming to maximize benefits and mitigate risks.    Minister Park also showcased Korea's commitment to addressing global climate change through contributions to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Green Growth Organization (GGGI). With the recent launch of the Carbon Free Alliance in October, he expressed confidence that it would play a crucial role in achieving carbon neutrality in the region. Minister Park sought the interest and active participation of member countries in these initiatives.   In addition to these discussions, Minister Park appealed for the support of APEC member countries for hosting Korea's 2030 Busan Expo. Recalling the significance of Busan hosting Korea's first APEC summit in 2005, he emphasized that the Busan World Expo aligns with APEC's vision of sustainable and inclusive growth. Minister Park stressed that the Busan World Expo would serve as an ideal platform for global discussions on solutions to complex crises, including climate change, digital gaps, and inequality.

• EU Commission Advances the Establishment of 'Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Industrial Alliance'

    [Leaders Times] At the 16th European Nuclear Energy Forum on Tuesday, the European Commission revealed its strategy to champion the Small Modular Reactor Industry Alliance.    To foster the growth of the European clean energy sector, the Commission is bringing together industrial associations comprising governments, researchers, and civil society, spanning areas like batteries, solar power, and hydrogen. The goal is to cultivate a supportive regulatory framework that encourages European manufacturing and facilitates the exchange of technology and expertise.    Despite varying opinions among EU member states regarding nuclear power, the Commission has taken a measured stance on supporting nuclear projects due to their high costs and prolonged construction timelines. Last year, a group of 12 member states, led by France, formed a 'nuclear energy union' advocating for the classification of nuclear energy as eco-friendly. Recently, energy ministers from these countries urged the formation of an EU-level SMR industrial alliance in a joint letter to the Commission.    The Commission perceives a shifting perspective on nuclear power, recognizing its importance in enhancing energy supply chain security, achieving climate and energy objectives, and bolstering European technological leadership and strategic autonomy in the energy sector.   In response, Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson announced at the European Nuclear Energy Forum that preparations for the creation of the EU SMR Industrial Alliance will commence in the coming months. By establishing a regulatory framework through the SMR Industry Alliance, the EU aims to secure a competitive edge globally, particularly against China and the United States.    However, Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, remains skeptical about supporting the nuclear industry, stating that she does not view nuclear power as a strategic technology for achieving climate neutrality in Europe. Some member states, including Germany and Austria, oppose supporting the nuclear industry, potentially hindering the progress of the SMR Industry Alliance.    Meanwhile, France insists that nuclear power should be treated on par with renewable energy, and EU funding institutions like the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Development and Reconstruction Bank (EBRD) should provide equal support.    Notably, the nuclear industry is expected to generate around 300,000 jobs by 2050.

• Industry Collaboration: South Korean Companies Advocate for Inclusion in EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism

  [Leaders Times] The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, in partnership with the European Commission (EU), conducted a briefing session on the Carbon Border Adjustment System (CBAM) at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry on November 15. This information session, initiated in December last year following the acceptance of AhnDuk-geun's proposal by the European Union (EU), aimed to foster collaboration through field support activities.    During the event, Gerassimos Thomas, European Commission Director-General for Taxation and Customs Union, elucidated the key aspects of the CBAM and its future operational framework. The CBAM transition period began in October and is anticipated to be fully implemented from 2026.    With over 150 participants from diverse industries such as steel, automobiles, and electronics, as well as representatives from research institutes and law firms, there was significant interest in the CBAM. The Q&A session saw lively discussions on the disparities between the Korea-EU emission calculation method, reporting method, and the carbon emission trading system (ETS).    In his opening speech, the Deputy Minister of Trade Byung Nae Yang emphasized the importance of effective communication between EU officials and Korean companies to bridge the gap between policy intentions and practical challenges. He pledged government support in establishing a reasonable CBAM implementation law by incorporating the voices of the industry during consultations with EU authorities.    Furthermore, the South Korean government, including the Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Economy and Finance, Ministry of Environment, and Ministry of SMEs and Startups, has conveyed its stance on the CBAM through high-level interviews and working-level technical consultations with the European Union (EU). These efforts aim to explain South Korea's systems, including the Korea Carbon Emission Trading System (K-ETS), ensuring that the country's conditions are considered in the future enactment of the CBAM implementation legislation.

• President Yoon Suk Yeol's Meeting with International Criminal Court (ICC) Judge Piotr Hofmański

    On November 13, President Yoon Suk Yeol engaged in discussions with Judge Piotr Hofmański, the President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), during the ICC's high-level seminar in the Asia-Pacific region hosted in Korea. The meeting focused on exploring avenues for cooperation between Korea and the ICC, as well as addressing regional and international political concerns.    President Yoon expressed strong support for the Republic of Korea's commitment to a norm-based international order grounded in freedom, human rights, and the rule of law. He reaffirmed Korea's dedication to collaborating with the ICC to achieve international criminal justice and uphold global peace.    Highlighting the heightened global attention on the ICC's role in addressing severe crimes worldwide, President Yoon commended the ICC's persistent efforts to pursue justice despite facing various challenges.    Judge Piotr Hofmański conveyed appreciation to Korea for its active support of the ICC's initiatives, including substantial human and financial contributions over the past two decades. Recognizing Korea as a key norm-setting nation in the establishment of the ICC and the development of the Rome Statute, he expressed a desire to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in the future.    Hofmański specifically acknowledged Korea's significant contribution of judges to the ICC, emphasizing the country's valuable role in supporting the court's activities. He expressed optimism about the prospect of Koreans, including young professionals, assuming full-time positions within the court's secretariat in the years to come.

• U.S. announces massive additional sanctions to deter Russian war capabilities

      The U.S. government imposed further sanctions on Russia last Thursday, targeting the energy and drone sectors, and implementing measures to preventRussia's future war capabilities.    Energy sector   The United States has imposed restrictions on Russia's liquefied natural gas (LNG) exportsas a major LNG exporter and is pushing to expand LNG exports to Europe. As part of these measures, sanctions were applied to companies and individuals involved in the development, operation, and ownership of the Siberian Arctic-2 liquefied natural gas project.The sanctions on Arctic-2 LNG are designed to curtail Russia's future energy production capacity. Although Arctic-2 LNG is set to begin LNG exports shortly, theimpact of the sanctions remains unknown.    Drone Sector   The sanctions have extended to the drone sector, targeting companies and individuals involved in the design, production, and component procurement networks of KUB-BLA and Lancet suicide drones. Notable additions to the sanctions list include companies like ZALA Aero and A Level Aerosystems CST, aiming to curb Russian drone production capabilities that pose a threat on the Ukrainian front. Aleksandr Zakarov, the owner of ZALA drone, and affiliated individuals have also been subjected to sanctions.    Prevention of sanctions bypass   To counter sanctions evasion, the U.S. has addressed companies in the United Arab Emirates, Turkiye, and China, accusing them of exporting dual-use goods crucial for Russia's war efforts. Turkiye and UAE-based companies exporting banned parts to Russia, along with three Chinese companies supplying electro-optical equipment, cameras, and radars, have been added to the sanctions. This move comes amid diplomatic pressure on countries and companies to deter bypass activities.    Meanwhile, Russia has claimed that they are adapting toU.S. sanctions, implying that the West might experience more adverse effects from these measures.

• EU Commission reviews Chinese wind turbine subsidies

    The EU Commission has considered an investigation into Chinese wind turbine manufacturers following an examination into Chinese electric vehicle subsidies. Didier Reynders, the EU Commissioner for Justice, suggested apossible investigation into subsidies for Chinese wind components last week. He emphasized the necessity for a response similar to the case of electric vehicle subsidies if there are indications of excessive Chinese government support for the wind industry.    Energy Commissioner Kadri Simpson, while urging caution against trade conflicts with China, acknowledged that if evidence of illegal trade practices like dumping emerges, taking certain measures would be inevitable. Some EU member states, however, take a cautious stance, considering the current situation as a highly political move that could strain relations with China.    The European wind industry faces challenges of unfair competition from inexpensive Chinese products. EU member states struggle to meet the EU's 2030 goal of 60 gigawatts(GW) of offshore wind power due to long permit procedures, high inflation, and fragile supply chains.    On the other hand, China is expanding its domestic turbine production through support from low-cost government loans.China has recently started full-fledged operations by winning orders for some renewable energy turbines in Serbia.    By using governmental subsidies, China expands domestic turbine production which operates at roughly one-third of the production cost compared to European or American companies. The widening cost gap impacts the European wind industry.   According to the Brussels-based think tank Bruegel, an investigation into China's subsidy practices would take at least a year, making it unable to address the immediate challenges confronting the European wind industry. Despite China's wind turbine exports to the EU being less significant than those of electric vehicles, it is anticipated that the Chinese government will adopt a comparable position to the scrutiny of electric vehicle subsidies once an investigation into wind turbines is initiated.    However, given that the intensifying trade dispute between the EU and China is contrary to the interests of both sides, the EU is unlikely to impose countervailing tariffs on wind turbines. The growing gap in turbine production costs between China and the West remains a significant challenge.

  2023 홍콩 케이-비프(한우) 데이(2023 Hong Kong K-Beef(HANWOO) Day) [리더스타임즈] 농림축산식품부는 한우 수출 활성화를 위해 11월 11일부터 12일까지 홍콩에서 한우데이 행사를 개최했다고 밝혔다. 홍콩은 1인당 국민소득이 높아 2022년 현재 수출되는 한우 물량의 90%를 소비하고 있는 중요한 시장으로 2023년 말레이시아, 캄보디아 등 신시장을 개척하면서 홍콩에 대한 수출비중은 다소 감소했으나 여전히 수출비중 1위를 차지하고 있다. 또한 한류에 대한 관심이 높고, 세계 식품시장의 시험대(Testbed)로써 한우 수출의 교두보 역할을 하고 있다. 이번 홍콩 한우데이 행사에 참석한 김정욱 축산정책관과 김삼주 한우협회장은 현지 수입업체를 대상으로 감사패를 전달하는 한편, 한우의 맛과 품질의 우수성에 대해 집중 홍보하고, 홍콩과의 수출 확대방안에 대해서도 논의했다. 특히 수입업체들은 한우에 대한 이력정보를 큐알(QR)코드를 통해 즉시 확인하는 시연회에 참여하여 큰 관심을 보였으며, 홍콩에서 유통되는 한우에도 안전성을 담보할 수 있는 이력정보 확인을 위한 큐알(QR)코드 도입을 요청했다고 밝혔다. 이번 행사에 참석한 현지 수입업체들은 “한우는 최고급 식재료로 주로 고급 레스토랑 및 마트에서 유통되고 있으나, 향후 케이(K) 푸드 활성화와 연계한 다양한 상품들을 통해 더욱 더 시장은 커질 것으로 기대한다”고 밝혔다. 김정욱 축산정책관은 “최근 럼피스킨 발생으로 홍콩으로의 수출이 중단된 한국 내 일부 지역에서도 종전과 같이 수출이 이루어질 수 있도록 양국간 긍정적인 협의가 이루어지고 있다”고 밝히며, “한우가 한류를 타고, 세계로 뻗어나가 우리 농식품의 우수성을 알리고, 한우 농가 경영안정에도 기여할 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”라고 밝혔다.

• The Ministry of Foreign Affairs requests IAEA and CTBTO to play an active role in addressing the North Korean nuclear issue

    Lee Joon-il, head of the Foreign Ministry's North Korean nuclear diplomacy planning team, visited Vienna, Austria, to discuss North Korean nuclear issues, including the recent situation on the Korean peninsula with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).    In a meeting with IAEA Deputy Secretary-General Massimo Aparo on Thursday, Lee said North Korea has continued illegal nuclear activities and missile provocations. He also highlighted the nuclear threat to South Korea by stipulating the Nuclear Forces Act, including the pre-emptive nuclear use doctrine in the Constitution. Lee called on the IAEA to continue to play an active role in a united international response, as the North Korean nuclear issue is one of the most significant threats to the non-proliferation regime as well as international peace and stability.     Deputy Secretary-General Aparo expressed serious concern about North Korea's nuclear activities, saying the IAEA is closely monitoring North Korea's nuclear activities and maintaining readiness for verification. As stated in the IAEA's annual secretary-general's report released in August, Aparo urged North Korea to comply with the Security Council's resolutions and cooperate with the IAEA in implementing the safety measures agreement.    On the morning of October 6, Lee visited Robert Floyd, secretary-general of the CTBTO. While outlining South Korea's efforts to deter North Korea's provocations and complete denuclearization, Lee said that if North Korea, the only country in the world to conduct a nuclear test in the 21st century, proceeds with another nuclear test despite repeated warnings from the international community.It will also pose a major challenge to the CTBTO, the only international organization aimed at preventing a nuclear test.    Lee evaluated that the CTBTO is interested in the North Korean nuclear issue and continues to monitor related trends. He urged the international community to take the lead in responding quickly to North Korea's actual nuclear test and creating public opinion of condemnation.Secretary-General Floyd said the CTBTO maintains a 24-hour monitoring system for North Korea's nuclear test sites in close cooperation with the international community, including South Korea. He also called upon North Korea to refrain from conducting further nuclear tests.

• South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin meets with UNRWA Executive Chairman Philippe Lazzarini

    Foreign Minister Park Jin held a meeting with Philippe Lazzarini, the Executive Chairman of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), who was visiting South Korea on the morning of October 6. The discussion focused on the current situation in the Middle East and the collaboration between South Korea and UNRWA.    Minister Park expressed his gratitude for UNRWA's active efforts in providing education, medical care, relief, and public services to approximately 6 million Palestinian refugees. He also reaffirmed South Korea's commitment to expanding its support for Palestinian refugees, emphasizing the country's responsibility within the international community.    Minister Park noted his aspirations for the continued development of the cooperative relationship between South Korea and UNRWA, taking into account UNRWA's crucial role in addressing the Palestinian refugee issue and contributing to regional stability. He also expressed South Korea's intent to make a constructive contribution to the Israeli-Palestinian matter during its non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council for the 2024-25 term.    Executive Chairman Lazzarini conveyed his appreciation for South Korea's consistent support for UNRWA's activities. He acknowledged that UNRWA faces ongoing challenges due to a chronic shortage of funds in comparison to the demand for assistance to Palestinian refugees. Lazzarini conveyed his hope to further strengthen cooperation between South Korea and UNRWA.
