On the afternoon of July 28, President Yoon Suk Yeol met with Peter Wennink, CEO of ASML in the Netherlands, who visited Korea at the presidential office in Yongsan. The meeting between the president and Wenninkwas the second time following a meeting with semiconductor companies held in November last year following the Korea-Dutch summit.
ASML, one of the best semiconductor exposure equipment companies in the world, held a groundbreaking ceremony to create the "ASML Semiconductor Equipment Cluster" in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do on November 16, 2022. The cluster is expected to be completed in 25 years with a remanufacturing and training center through an investment worth about 240 billion won.
At this meeting, the president praised ASML, the only company that supplies extreme ultraviolet exposure equipment essential for semiconductor ultra-fine processes.
Earlier, in three meetings with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, the president shared the perception that the two countries, which share the universal values of liberal democracy and market economy, are ideal partners for economic security cooperation. Therefore, he stressed that if ASML establishes additional semiconductor equipment production plants in Korea following existing investments, it will greatly contribute to creating synergy between the semiconductor industries of the two countries as well as stabilizing global semiconductor supply chains.
Wennink, CEO of ASML,said he is very happy that the construction of a semiconductor cluster in Hwaseong, which began construction in November last year, is progressing smoothly. Furthermore, he positively evaluated the growth of Korean semiconductor companies, which are major customers, and Korea's investment conditions.
In the future, the president will continue to make various efforts to attract investment in Korea through continuous on-site communication with the global semiconductor industry.
