Korean mathematician HeoJunYi(39. June Huh) was honored with the Fields Medal of the "Math Nobel Prize" on the 5th (local time).He is professor at Princeton University and a professor of mathematics at the Korean Academy of Advanced Sciences.
The International Mathematical Union (IMU) announced Huh as the winner of the Fields Medal at the ceremony held at Alto University in Helsinki, Finland.
The Fields Medal, established in 1936, is called the "Novel Prize in Mathematics" along with the Abel Prize, which is given to mathematicians under the age of 40 who achieve and are expected toachieve outstanding achievements in the mathematics.
Once awarded, two to four winners are usually selected. At the awards ceremony, three people besides Professor Huh jointly won the award. The winners included Ukraine's Marina Viazowski. Viazowka is the second woman to win the Fields Medal.
Professor Huh told Yonhap News after the award, "The Fields Medal winner list has a series of names like heroes who have contributed greatly to algebra, which is my field," adding, "It's strange, burdensome, and strange to think that my name is written right below the list."
He also said, "I did some things alone, but in most cases, there are many studies that I did with my colleagues," adding, "I think I received a big award on behalf of my colleagues, and I will continue to study more exciting and fun."
Professor Huh previously received the Simons Research Award, Samsung Ho-Am Award, New Horizons Award, and Blavatnik Young Scientist Award for outstanding research achievements and vigorous research activities.
