• South Korea and U.S. Hold 10th Energy Security Dialogue in Houston

      On April 30th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the U.S. Department of State convened the 10th South Korea-U.S. Energy Security Dialogue at the prestigious Baker Institute for Public Policy in Houston, Texas.   Discussions centered around key topics such as decarbonization efforts, clean energy cooperation, reconstruction of energy infrastructure in Ukraine, critical minerals and electric vehicle batteries, and collaboration on multilateral platforms.  The timing of the dialogue was significant given the escalating tensions in the Middle East, amplifying the importance of enhancing energy security cooperation between South Korea, a nation heavily reliant on energy imports, and the United States, a major energy exporter and ally. Additionally, both parties explored avenues to expedite the transition to clean energy in response to the pressing global challenge of climate change, while bolstering collaboration on multilateral platforms.  The United States, as the world's largest LNG exporter, plays a pivotal role in South Korea's energy landscape, with approximately 40 million tons of LNG imported annually. Furthermore, with renewable energy accounting for over 20% of total energy production in the United States as of 2023, there are promising prospects for South Korean companies in sectors such as solar panels and hydrogen power generation.  The 10th South Korea-U.S. Energy Security Dialogue, held in Houston, renowned as the energy capital, holds significance not only for fostering intergovernmental cooperation but also for facilitating dialogue between energy companies from both nations. This dialogue serves as a platform to support the entry of South Korean companies into the U.S. energy market and explore medium- to long-term cooperation plans with the U.S. academic and energy security community.   Looking ahead, the 11th South Korea-U.S. Energy Security Dialogue is slated to take place in South Korea next year, continuing the tradition of bilateral engagement on critical energy security issues

• Overseas Consuls General Meeting Discusses Global Multilateral Diplomacy

    The Overseas Consuls General Meeting in 2024 concluded with a final topic discussion on the morning of April 25th, centering on "Global Multilateral Diplomacy." The session saw the participation of Kang In-sun, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, alongside the consuls general. The discussion was structured into three parts, each addressing crucial aspects of international relations.   In the first segment, emphasis was placed on enhancing contributions to international peace and security by elevating democratic standards and engaging in activities within the UN Security Council. This included exploring avenues for expanding Korea's role in promoting global stability.    Vice Minister Kang, in her opening remarks, underscored the significance of Korea's multilateral diplomacy amidst geopolitical and geoeconomic shifts. She urged a thoughtful consideration of goals, stressing the consul general's crucial role in realizing Korea's ambition as a global pivotal state.    During the subsequent session, Kwon Ki-hwan, Director-General for Multilateral Diplomacy, highlighted Korea's commitment to strengthening international solidarity based on universal values like democracy and human rights. He outlined plans for Korea to play a more active role in global affairs during its upcoming term on the UN Security Council.    In the following segment, Kim Hee-sang, Director-General for Economic Diplomacy, outlined the government's vision on key global economic issues, including supply chains, digitalization, AI, climate, and energy. He discussed Korea's strategies for engagement within major multilateral economic forums such as the G7, G20, APEC, and OECD.    In the final session, Kwon Ki-hwan reiterated the importance of effective implementation of global South diplomacy by Korea through initiatives like advanced-country-type Official Development Assistance (ODA) and strengthening strategic partnerships with major donor countries.    The topic discussions served as a platform to share Korea's vision and contributions to the international community, gather insights from the consul general, and propose policies to bolster Korea's role as a "global pivotal state" in multilateral diplomacy. 

• 2024 World Climate Industry EXPO to be Jointly Hosted by South Korea and the International Energy Agency

    The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy of South Korea and the International Energy Agency (IEA) have announced their plans to jointly host the 2024 World Climate Industry Expo. This collaboration reflects a shared understanding of the urgent need for international cooperation in promoting zero-carbon energy solutions such as nuclear power, renewable energy, hydrogen, and carbon capture, storage, and utilization (CCUS) to address the global climate crisis and enhance energy security.  The World Climate Industry Expo, first established last year, integrates 30 domestic energy and environment exhibitions along with investment attraction events. The South Korean government has made efforts to facilitate this joint hosting with the IEA, including sending a letter from the Prime Ministerand holding a meeting with IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. With the active participation and guidance of the IEA, this year's expo is set to evolve into a truly international event.  The theme for this year's expo is "Opening the Era of Zero-Carbon Energy through Climate Technology," with a focus on discussions about accelerating the transition to sustainable clean energy. The expo is expected to serve as a global platform for advancing the spread of zero-carbon energy technologies and initiatives, following the agreements made at the UN Climate Change Conference last December.  IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol will deliver a keynote speech during the event and present the IEA's analysis of major energy technologies essential for achieving global climate goals. Professor James Bacchus is also set to give a keynote address. Major global companies such as Samsung, Hyundai Motors, Tesla, and Ørsted will showcase the latest and future technologies related to zero-carbon energy.  Lee Ho-hyeon, Director of Energy Policy, stated, "I welcome IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol's decision to co-host the expo for the spread of zero-carbon energy." He added, "We will work with the IEA to elevate the World Climate Industry Expo into a leading international event for addressing the climate crisis." 

• MDCP Holds 9th Operating Committee Meeting

    The 9th Operating Committee meeting of theMulti-agency Donor Coordination Platform for Ukraine (MDCP) took place in Kyiv, Ukraine, on April 10. The meeting was attended by Kang Seok-hee, South Korea’s government representative supporting Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts. This was the first in-person meeting since South Korea joined the MDCP in February 2023.  Major donor countries and institutions at the meeting expressed their unwavering support for Ukraine’s reconstruction and recovery efforts. They issued a joint statement outlining financial support direction for Ukraine for 2024-25. The statement emphasized contributions to Ukraine’s urgent recovery needs in 2024, such as protecting energy infrastructure and securing alternative power sources. Countries also agreed to launch a Business Advisory Council, composed of private enterprises, at the upcoming Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin in June 2024.  Attendees praised Ukraine’s commitment to reforms and efforts to secure sustainable economic growth. They highlighted the importance of enhancing the effectiveness of international support and expanding the participation of the private sector in the reconstruction and recovery process.  South Korea reiterated its commitment to supporting Ukraine through humanitarian aid and long-term reconstruction in areas such as infrastructure, healthcare, and education. This support aligns with the 'Ukraine Peace Solidarity Initiative' announced during President Yoon Seok-yeol's visit to Ukraine in July 2022.  The next MDCP Operating Committee meeting is scheduled to take place in Berlin in June during the Ukraine Recovery Conference.

• ASEAN-ROK Dialogue: Strengthening Partnerships and Addressing Regional Challenges

    The annual Deputy Ministerial Meeting between Korea and ASEAN countries, known as the 'ASEAN-ROK Dialogue,' convened on April 4th to assess the current state of cooperation and discuss future directions. This year marked the 35th anniversary of establishing the ASEAN-ROK dialogue relations, underscoring the significance of the occasion.    The dialogue aimed to establish the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), representing the highest level of partnership between Korea and ASEAN. It provided a platform to review the current state of Korean-ASEAN cooperation, exchange views on future development directions, and discuss regional and international situations.    In the opening remarks, Deputy Minister Chung Byung-won emphasized the importance of strengthening relations with ASEAN and the full-scale implementation of the Korean-ASEAN Solidarity Initiative (KASI). He highlighted strategic coordination, digital transformation, and climate change response as key areas for mutual cooperation.    The Deputy Minister elaborated on how the Korean-ASEAN Solidarity Initiative contributes to ASEAN's goal of building three pillars of community by 2025. He emphasized the need to expand cooperation in future industries such as digital technology, electric vehicles, and smart cities to enhance supply chain stability and resilience.    Participants also exchanged views on major regional and international issues, including the situation on the Korean Peninsula, developments in the South China Sea, the issue of Myanmar, the Israel-Hamas conflict, and the war in Ukraine.    ASEAN reaffirmed its support for Korea's North Korea policy, including its ‘Audacious Initiative.’ The dialogue concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthen partnerships and address regional challenges, underscoring the importance of cooperation between Korea and ASEAN in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.    Overall, the ASEAN-ROK Dialogue provided a valuable opportunity for both sides to deepen cooperation, enhance mutual understanding, and address shared challenges in the years ahead.  

• Convening the 3rd summit for democracy

    On March 18, 2024, the Korean government, alongside the governments of the United Kingdom, Ecuador, and the United States, co-hosted the Third Democracy Summit Ministerial Meeting in Seoul. Focused on the theme of 'AI/Digital Technology and Democracy,' the summit aimed to address the evolving intersection of technological innovation and democratic principles.  The Ministerial Meeting marked the initiation of the Third Democracy Summit, which spanned three days from March 18 to March 20, and drew over 400 participants. Among them were approximately 30 government officials at the ministerial and vice-ministerial level, representatives from diplomatic corps stationed in Korea, as well as individuals from civil society, industry, and academia.  In the welcoming remarks, President Yoon Suk-yeol underscored the pivotal role of democracy in Korea's journey, rooted in universal values such as freedom, human rights, and the rule of law. He expressed Korea's commitment to sharing its democratic development experience with the global community through the Summit.  Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yeol, in his opening speech, highlighted the significance of technological innovation amid global democratic challenges. He emphasized the intertwined nature of artificial intelligence, digital technology, and democracy, acknowledging both the opportunities and challenges.  Throughout the Ministerial Meeting, representatives from participating governments emphasized the imperative for democratic nations to exchange policies and experiences concerning digital technology's impact on democracy. They stressed the need for collaborative efforts to harness the benefits of digital innovation while safeguarding democratic values.   The meeting facilitated comprehensive discussions on the implications of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence and digital technology for future generations' democracy. It served as a platform for fostering international consensus on the responsible use of emerging technologies in alignment with democratic principles.

      Q. 연세대학교 실내건축학과는?   A. 연세대학교 실내건축학과는 공간을 기획/계획/설계/관리 하는 등 실내 공간 전반에서 이루어지는 일에 대해 배우는 학과입니다. 직접 건물을 설계하고 도면을 그리고 모형을 만드는 디자인 실기 수업과 인간은 어떤 환경에서 어떤 디자인에서 공간의 이점을 얻을 수 있는지 이와 관련한 법규와 체계는 어떻게 되어 있는지 배우는 이론 수업을 배웁니다.     Q. 졸업 후의 진로는 어떻게 나뉘는 편입니까?   A. 크게 공간 기획 / 설계 / 관리의 3분야로 설명할 수 있습니다. 이는 실제로 건축 업무 진행 시 공간이 대개 기획 – 설계 – 관리 순으로 진행되는 점을 반영한 것입니다.   먼저 공간 기획 분야입니다. 연세대학교 실내건축학과에서 가장 많은 인재를 배출하는 분야로, 다양한 실내 공간들의 사용자 데이터를 조사한 후 이를 바탕으로 공간 구성에 대한 전략들을 구체화하는 것이 핵심 업무입니다. 또한 공간 레이아웃과 가구 배치 등 계획안을 작성한 후 건설사 및 시공사에게 전달하고, 그들에게서 받은 설계안을 검토하는 역할도 수행합니다.    다음으로 설계 분야입니다. 흔히 건축학과 하면 떠올리는 도면을 그리는 작업이 주 업무로, 말 그대로 기획안을 바탕으로 구체적인 설계를 수행합니다.   마지막으로 관리 분야입니다. 이들은 전체 프로젝트의 플랜을 관리하고 일정을 조율하는 쪽(PM)과, 시공이 완료된 뒤에 유지 관리를 하는 쪽(FM) 등으로 구분됩니다.     Q. 본교 실내건축학과만의 특별한 문화나 행사가 있습니까?   A. 특정 수업에서 선배들과의 만남을 가질 수 있습니다. 때에 따라 다르지만, 선배님들이 현직으로 계시는 기업에서 강연을 오시기 때문에 우리 학과 진로와 아주 밀접한 이야기를 들을 수 있어 유익합니다. 그리고 실내건축학과는 매년 10월에 연세대학교 백양누리홀에서 졸업 전시회를 개최합니다. 올해도 있을 예정이고, 누구든 제한 없이 와서 관람하실 수 있으니 실내건축학과 또는 유사학과에 관심이 있다면 학과가 배우는 내용과 만드는 작품들을 조금 더 가까이서 보실 수 있는 기회가 될 겁니다!   Q. 입학을 위해 준비해두면 좋은 것이 있습니까? 본인만의 입시 팁을 주자면?   A. 무엇이든 다양하게 해 봤으면 좋겠습니다. 카페를 가든, 도서관을 가서 책을 읽든, 디자인 잡지를 보든... 디자인 분야는 샘솟는 아이디어가 생명인데, 많이 돌아다녀보고 접해본 사소한 경험들이 어느날 갑자기 번뜩이는 아이디어로 변신할 때가 있습니다.   입시에 한해서 이야기한다면, ‘사람들에게 필요한 공간은 무엇인가?’라는 물음을 끊임없이 고민하는 자세가 필요합니다. “디자인이나 설계 잘하고 건축가 많이 알아요!”보다는, 배리어프리 공간에 대한 고민, 열/음/조명 환경 등 인체에 적합한 환경에 대한 고민, 복합문화공간에서 사람들의 요구사항을 어떻게 디자인으로 풀어낼 수 있을 것인가에 대한 고민 등 조금 더 학문적이고 구체적으로 생각하고 연구한 흔적들이 보이면 좋습니다.   Q. 미래의 후배들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있습니까?   A. 진심을 다해 해 보고 후회하는 게 낫지 않을까요. 어떤 목표든 너무 높아 보인다고 미리 마음 접고 편한 길을 찾기보다, 일단 올라가 봅시다. 올라가면 어디든 도달할 수 있어요. 요즘 입시 트렌드가 어떠하고, 친구들이 어떻게 말하고 보다는 나의 길을 믿으며 올라갑시다. 결국 입시는 나와의 싸움이니까요.   아, 그리고 넣고 싶은 학과나 학교가 있다면 주저 말고 한 번쯤 넣어보세요. 시도도 해보지 않으면 미련이 잔뜩 남아서 대학 평생 떠올리게 될 수도 있답니다 :)

OB 분들 중에는 현재 회사를 이끌고 계신 분도 있고, 대기업에 취직하신 분, 공문원을 하고 계신 분들 등등 다양한 분야에서 성공하신 분들의 이야기를 가까운 곳에서 직접 들을 수 있어 졸업 후 진로를 정하는 데에도 많이 도움이 되고 학교생활에 대한 팁이나 본인들이 살면서 얻은 깨달음을 아낌없이 전달해주셔서 대학생들에게 유익함이 아주 큰 행사입니다.   Q. 입학을 위해 준비해두면 좋은 것이 있습니까? 본인만의 입시 팁을 주자면?   A. 일단 가장 중요한건 누가 뭐래도 공부입니다. 특히 국어, 영어, 수학, 과학은 초, 중, 고등학교 때 공부한 내용들이 대학교 수업 내용과도 연관이 매우매우 크기 때문에 미리미리 공부를 열심히 해두지 않으면 대학와서도 수업에 적응하기 힘들겁니다. 사실 입시에 관해서는 딱 하나만 기억하면 됩니다. ‘남들보다 한 발만 더’. 항상 남들보다 한 발 일찍 출발해서 한 발 늦게 들어가는 의지가 중요해요. 남들과 똑같이 해서는 남들보다 성공할 수 없습니다. 많은 것을 요구하지 않습니다. 딱 한 발만 더 가면 됩니다. 그 사소한 차이들이 모여 나중에 분명 여러분을 성공으로 이끌어 줄 것입니다.   Q. 미래의 후배들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있습니까?   A. 공부하기 많이 힘들죠? 세상엔 뭐이리 재밌는 일들이 많은지 공부만 하려고 하면 재밌는 것들이 나를 막 방해하고, 살면서 별로 쓸데도 없는 것 같은 내용을 왜 공부하고있어야하나 싶고...사실 공부를 해야하는 목적은 여러분에게 시련을 주려는 겁니다. 힘들고 어려운 상황에 처했을 때 여러분이 얼마나 끈기있고 열심히 노력하는지를 보는거죠. 그 시련을 버티고 고개를 들었을 땐 여러분이 이전까지는 경험도 못해봤을 재미있는 일들이 여러분을 기다리고 있을 겁니다. 제가 그랬거든요ㅎㅎ. 그러니 여러분!     힘들어도 포기하지 말고 우리 열심히 살아보자구요! 고려대학교에서 여러분을 기다리고 있겠습니다.

    Q. 계명대학교 의예과는? A. 계명대학교 의과대학은 1899년 북장로교 의료선교사 존슨(Woodbridge O.Jonson)에 의해 설립된 제중원이 모태가 되어 영남권 초기 서양의술을 시작한 역사를 가지고 있습니다.  1978년 종합대학 '계명대학교'로 승격한 이후 1980년 동산기독병원과 통합하여 의과대학을 신설하여 지금에 이르고 있습니다. 2010년 계명대학교 성서캠퍼스로 이전 하였고 대구 지하철 2호선 강창역 근처에 학과 건물이 위치해 있습니다. 의과대학 건물과 계명대학교 동산병원이 연결되어 있어 본과 3학년 때부터 시작되는 실습 수업은 동산병원에서 진행하게 됩니다.   Q. 졸업 후의 진로는 어떻게 나뉘는 편입니까? A. 본과 4학년 동안 치르는 국가고시에 합격하면 졸업과 함께 의사 면허를 부여받을 수 있습니다. 이후의 진로는 여러 가지로 나뉘게 되는데, 현재 학생들이 가장 흔히 선택하는 것은 수련병원에서 인턴-전공의 등의 수련과정을 거치는 것입니다. 이 외에도 일차 진료를 보는 일반의, 연구를 중점으로 하는 기초의학 교수 등이 있습니다. 수련 과정을 거친 후에는 크게 대학병원에 남아 교수로서 후학 양성에 기여하거나, 2차병원/개원가로 나가 환자 진료를 보는 경우가 많습니다.   Q. 본교 의예과만의 특별한 문화나 행사가 있습니까? A. 계명대학교 의예과는 선후배 간의 교류를 위한 기회를 많이 열어두는 편입니다. 입학 당시 예과 2학년과 신입생을 한 명씩 매칭하여 학교 생활에 도움을 줄 수 있도록 합니다. 이외에도 동문회, 동아리, 교실원(쉽게 말하면 과목 도우미) 간 모임을 주기적으로 가집니다. 또한 의과대학 동아리마다 개최하는 신입생 환영 공연과 정기공연을 통해 학창 시절의 소중한 추억을 만들 수 있습니다. 의예과만의 특별한 행사로는 해부제를 꼽고 싶습니다. 인체를 공부하는 의예과 특성상 학생들의 교육을 위해 시신을 기증해 주시는 분들이 계십니다. 해부제는 그러한 분들의 숭고한 뜻을 기리기 위한 행사이며, 공부할 수 있는 기회를 주심에 감사드림과 함께 생명의 무거움을 느낄 수 있는 아주 중요한 행사라고 생각합니다.   Q. 입학을 위해 준비해두면 좋은 것이 있습니까? 본인만의 입시 팁을 주자면? A. 제가 입학한 지는 시간이 꽤 지나 현재의 입시와는 다소 거리가 있을지 모르나, 제가 후배님들께 드리고 싶은 말씀은 ‘현재에 집중하라’입니다. 누가‘고3은 공부를 가장 많이 하는 시기가 아니라, 공부에 대한 걱정을 가장 많이 하는 시기다’라고 하더라고요. 수험생 기간이 길고 힘드실 것 압니다. 까마득한 미래를 떠올리면 불안해지는 게 당연하므로, 오늘 내가 당장 할 수 있는 것에 집중하시면 좋겠습니다. 달리기에 비유하면 마라톤을 종점까지 내리 달리는 건 힘들지만, 짧은 스퍼트를 주기적으로 내는 게 더 효율적일 수 있다는 뜻입니다. 수능이 가까워질수록 그 스퍼트를 조금씩 더 자주, 더 길게 내면 좋겠죠. 저는 아주 특별한 사람들만이 의과대학에 간다고 생각하지 않습니다. 공부도 재능이라고들 하지만, 저는 그 노력과 끈기가 더 주요하다고 생각합니다. 그리고 그건 마음먹기에 따라 정말 누구나 할 수 있어요.   Q. 미래의 후배들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있습니까? A. 우선 입학을 진심으로 축하드립니다. 저마다 과정은 달라도, 입학하기 위해 학창시절에 얼마나 노력하셨을지 알기에 고생하셨다는 말을 해드리고 싶습니다. 신입생 때 마음껏 성취를 즐기고, 동기/선배들과 좋은 추억 쌓으셨으면 좋겠습니다. 학교를 다니다 보면 자신 있던 공부가 힘들게 느껴지고, 똑똑한 동기들을 보며 위축되는 순간들이 있을 수 있습니다. 흔히들 겪는 경험이니 너무 걱정 마세요. 여러분은 지금까지 노력하여 성과를 이뤄봤기 때문에 충분히 해낼 수 있습니다. 주위의 동기들은 6년이란 시간동안 여러분이 서로 배우고 함께 성장할 수 있는 최고의 파트너가 될 것입니다. 동기들과 함께 의지하며 즐거운 학교생활 하시길 응원하겠습니다.

    Q. 이화여자대학교 중어중문학과는?   A. 전 세계 인구의 약 20%를 차지하고 있는 나라의 언어, 중국어의 언어는 선택사항일까요? 중국어 사용인구는 많을 뿐만 아니라 중국은 현재 세계에서 가장 빠른 속도로 발전해나가고 있습니다. 세계 각국의 기업들은 중국 시장에 뛰어들고 있으며, 세계는 중국과 교류해야 합니다. 이화여자대학교 중어중문학과는 한자문화권(漢字文化圈)의 문화적 원천이라 일컬을 수 있는 중국의 언어와 문화의 교수에 중점을 두면서 또한 중국문학이 경학 · 사학 등의 일반 학술 사상과 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있으므로 언어 · 문화 · 역사 · 철학 등의 분야와 연계시켜 수학할 수 있는 교과 과정을 마련하고 있습니다.     Q. 졸업 후의 진로는 어떻게 나뉘는 편입니까?   A. 중어중문학과 학생들은 졸업 후 대학원 진학 및 중국학 연구를 위한 중국어권/영어권으로 유학을 하거나 취업을 합니다. 이 중 취업의 경우, 대기업, 출판/기업/금융계, 외국 공관/정부 각 기관/국회, 번역사, 통역사 등 등 여러 분야에서 자신의 재능을 발휘할 수 있습니다. 현재 중화권에서는 많은 중국 기업들이 한국 기업과 협력하고 있으며, 중국 시장을 겨냥하여 진출하는 기업도 증가하는 추세로 중문과 출신 인재의 활동 범위도 다양화되고 있습니다.물론 ‘교직이수’ 과정을 밟아서 교수/중국어 교사 등 교육 방면에서도 활약할 수 있습니다.  + 취득자격증 HSK 5급, 6급     Q. 본교 중어중문과만의 특별한 문화나 행사가 있나요?   A. 첫 번째, 중어권 해외 학교와의 활발한 교류 프로그램입니다. 북경대학(北京大学), 복단대학(复旦大学)과 협약. 그 중 학부생 대상(2학년 이상)으로 8학기 중 한 학기 동안 상해 복단대학교에 파견하는 PAGUS 해외학기 프로그램은 수준 높은 외국어 집중교육을 시키는 해외 수학 프로그램으로서, 본교 등록금의 80%를 장학금으로 지급 운영하고 있습니다. 두 번째, 중문인들만을 위한 독특한 동아리, 스터디그룹 자치활동이 있습니다. 중문인의 밤으로 매년 11월, 중국어 연극을 상연하고 교수님과 학생들이 교류하는 프로그램이 있습니다. 또한, 1박 2일로 진행된 글로벌 역량 강화 캠프로, 교내 학생들과 중국 유학생으로 구성되어 긴밀한 교류와 협동으로 한중문화를 깊이 있게 이해할 수 있습니다. 이 외에도 이화 중국어 토론대회, 중국 유학생 및 교환학생과의 교류, 중국어 원어 연극회, 중국 지역학 연구회 등 다양한 활동에서 자신의 재능과 꿈을 펼칠 수 있습니다.   Q. 입학을 위해 준비해두면 좋은 것이 있습니까? 본인만의 입시 팁을 주자면?   A. 중어중문학과는 말 그대로 언어와 문학을 배우는 학과입니다. 그러니, 중국어와 중국 문화에 관심이 많은 학생이라면 누구나 흥미롭게 수업을 따라올 수 있을 것 같습니다. 중어중문학과에 오기 위해서 반드시 준비해야만 하는 것은 없습니다. 입학하게 된다면 한국어 수업뿐만아니라 원어(중국어)수업과 해외수업이 활발히 이루어지고 있기 떄문에 대학생활을 하면서도 충분히 중국어 실력을 증진시킬 수 있습니다. 하지만 고등학교 시절 중국어를 조금이나마 배우고 입학한다면 다른 학우들보다는 조금 더 수월하게 수업을 들을 수 있을 것 같습니다. 이화에서 배우고자 하는 열정이 넘치는 학생들, 벗들이라면 중어중문학과에서 본인이 원하는 큰 성과를 이뤄낼 수 있을 것이라고 생각합니다.       Q. 미래의 후배들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있습니까?   A. 공부.. 정말 하기 싫었고 왜 해야하는지 이해가 안 가는 행동이었습니다. 공부를 하다 보면 항상 즐거울 수는 없습니다. 계속, 그리고 매일매일 똑같은 자리에서 공부 또 공부를 하다 보면 힘들 때, 포기하고 싶을 때가 정말 많을 겁니다. 하지만 공부는 흔히 ‘엉덩이 싸움’이라고 합니다. 단지 말 그대로 오래 앉아 있는 것만이 공부를 잘하는 게 아니라 힘들더라도 오래 앉아 있으면서도 공부하고 있는 그 순간에 집중하는 게 공부를 잘하는 것이라고 생각합니다. 즉, 엉덩이 힘과 ‘독기’가 필요한 것 같습니다!!   지금 당장, 1년 또는 그 이상을 더 공부한다고 생각하면 너무 길어서 언제 끝나나 싶고 다른 친구들은 다 놀러가고 더 재미있는 거, 더 좋은 거를 한다거나, sns 스토리를 넘겨보면서 ‘나는 뭐 하고 있나’ 라는 생각이 들겁니다. 하지만, 긴 일생에서 1년, 그 이상의 시간은 정말 작고 금방 흘러가는 시간이며 여러분의 인생을 위해 그 정도의 시간을 투자한다고 생각하셨으면 좋겠습니다! 훗날, 여러분의 상황은 더 좋아질 것이고 작년보다 더 성장한 여러분으로 바뀌어 있을지도 모르니까요.   그리고 주변에서 뭐라고 하든 여러분을 잘 모르고 하는 이야기이니 그냥 여러분이 세운 여러분만의 그 길로 가시면 됩니다!!! 소위, “마이웨이”요. 그러니까 여러분이 생각한 대로, 계획한 대로 하세요. 그 순간의 여러분의 선택이 그 당시의 선택들 중에서 가장 좋은, 최선의 선택이었을 테니까요 :)

      Q. 연세대학교   화학과는? A. 물, 소금, 설탕, 다이아몬드, 나무, 유리, 플라스틱, 비닐 등등 우리 주변의 물질들은 무엇으로 이루어져 있으며 어떻게 만들어졌을까요? 화학이란 세상을 이루고 있는 다양한 물질들의 구조, 그러한 물질들이 갖는 성질, 그들 사이의 반응과 변화를 다루는 학문으로, 화학과는 화학이라는 분야를 깊게 학습하는 학과입니다. 물질을 이루는 기본 성분인 ‘원소’들 사이의 결합을 통해 수많은 물질이 만들어지고 서로 다른 물질이 만나 새로운 물질로 바뀐다는 사실을 화학의 4대 분야(유기화학, 무기화학, 물리화학, 분석화학)에 걸쳐서 공부한다고 생각하시면 됩니다.   Q. 졸업 후의 진로는 어떻게 나뉘는 편입니까? A. 화학과 학생들은 졸업 후 대학원에 진학하거나 취업을 하는데, 이 중 취업의 경우 이과 계열에서 가장 많은 분야로 나아갈 수 있는 학과가 바로 화학과입니다. 화학을 기반으로 하는 산업이 매우 많은 만큼 바이오/의약학/식품, 석유화학/화장품, 반도체/배터리/신소재 등의 공업 계열로 나아갈 수 있습니다. 물론 저와 같이 ‘교직 이수’과정을 통해 과학교사 및 강사가 될 수도 있습니다.   Q. 본교 화학과만의 특별한 문화나 행사가 있습니까? A. 연세대학교 화학과에는 사진 찍을 때 대표적인 포즈가 하나 있습니다. 바로 벤젠 포즈인데요, 벤젠(C₆H₆)은 화학과에서 아주 중요하게 배우는 물질 중 하나로, 1군 발암 물질이라 아주 위험하지만 우리 주변의 수많을 물질을 만들기 위한 기본 재료로 사용됩니다. 이러한 벤젠의 생김새가 정육각형의 고리 모양(⌬)이기 때문에 화학과 학생들은 사진을 찍을 때 양손을 주먹 쥔 채로 검지와 소지만 펴 양손의 손가락을 서로 닿게 하여 육각형을 만드는 포즈를 취합니다. 얼마나 유명하냐구요? 무려 작년 5월, 연세대학교 축제 아카라카에서 아이브(IVE)가 따라한 포즈라구요!   Q. 입학을 위해 준비해두면 좋은 것이 있습니까? 본인만의 입시 팁을 주자면? A. 화학과는 궁금증 많고 꼼꼼한 사람들에게 적합한 과인 듯싶습니다. 화학과에 오기 위해서 반드시 준비해야만 하는 것이 있거나 하지는 않지만, 단순히 고등학생 때 과학탐구 과목 중에 그나마 화학이 가장 괜찮았다고 화학과를 선택하는 것은 안 됩니다! 학교 공부를 넘어 화학 자체에 대한 호기심과 관심이 어느 정도 있어야 하며, 이러한 관심을 강연 청강, 독서, 검색 등을 통해 지식으로 변환하여 쌓아두어야 합니다. 많은 학생들이 “저 화학 좋아해요”, “이런 분야 신기해서 관심 있어요”라는 말은 하고 다니면서 정작 내용을 검색해봤다거나 찾아서 알게 되었다는 학생은 거의 없습니다. 관심에서 멈추지 않고 스스로 심화된 지식을 탐구하려고 해야 합니다. 그게 자연과학을 하려는 학생에게 가장 필요한 능력이고, 학생부종합전형을 정복할 수 있는 길입니다.   Q. 미래의 후배들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있습니까? A. 공부... 하기 싫죠? 사칙연산만 할 줄 알아도 사는 데 지장 없는데 수학을 뭘 이리 어려운 걸 배우나 싶고, 한국에서만 살 건데 영어 공부도 왜 해야 하는지 모르겠고... 저도 여러분과 같은 불평불만으로 중고등학생 시절을 보냈습니다. 그리고 성인이 된 지금에서야 그 공부의 뜻을 알아가는 것 같아요. 국어에서는 논리력을, 수학에서는 사고력을, 영어에서는 이해력을 가르치려는 목적이었구나 하고요. 지금 무엇을 하고 있는지, 왜 해야 하는지 모르겠다면 그 이유를 알게 될 때까지, 혹은 본인은 할 필요가 없다는 것을 깨달을 때까지는 일단 묵묵히 밀고 나가는 것이 중요합니다. 경험이 최고의 파트너입니다. (공부도, 게임도, 운동도, 삶도, 다 하다 보면 알게 돼요 여러분)  인생에서 가장 재밌고 행복하고 걱정 없을 시기를 핸드폰만 보며 무의미하게 날리지 마세요. 많은 어른들이 중고등학생 때를 그리워하죠? 시험기간에 조금 더 빠짝 공부할 걸, 놀 때 그냥 눈치 보지 말고 친구들이랑 신나게 놀 걸, 그때 뭐 할 걸, 그날 뭐 하지 말 걸 등등 아직까지도 생각나고 아쉬운 것이 잔뜩 있습니다. 공부도, 노는 것도, 여러분들이 먼 훗날 돌이켜 보았을 때 ‘그 순간을 후회하지 않을 만큼’ 하세요. 순간의 작은 선택이 인생을 바꿉니다.

    Q. 연세대학교 영어영문학과는?   A. 영어영문학과는 크게 ‘영어학’과‘영문학’으로 나뉩니다. 대부분의 사람들이 보편적으로 생각하는 영어영문학과는 아마 셰익스피어 문학 작품을 공부하는 학과일텐데요! 셰익스피어 문학처럼 여러 시대 동안 여러 장르를 통해 표현된 영국과 미국의 문학 작품을 분석하며 문학의 보편적 가치와 의미를 경험하고 이를 통한 인문학적 교양과 시각을 내재화하는 파트는‘영문학’입니다.‘영어학’은 영어라는 언어 자체의 소리와 특성, 그리고 이를 활용한 어휘 및 문장 구조의 의미를 분석하며 과거와 현재의 영어의 모습과 사용과 관련된 문제를 다룹니다. 여러분이 영어 공부할 때 가장 헷갈려하는 영어 문법도 영어학에서 다루는 영역 중 일부에 해당한다고 생각하시면 돼요! 이 외에도 영어 말하기, 쓰기와 같은 실용 영어 수업과 영어 교육과 관련된 강의도 진행됩니다.   Q. 졸업 후의 진로는 어떻게 나뉘는 편입니까?   A. 영어영문학과와 직접적으로 연관된 진로는 영어영문학 관련 석사 및 박사 학위 취득을 통해 교수 또는 인문과학연구원으로 나가는 경우가 있습니다. 또한 영어 교강사 등 영어 교육 방면으로 진학을 하는 경우도 많습니다. 그 외에 모든 진로가 영어영문학과와 간접적으로 연결될 수 있다고 말하고 싶어요. 영어는 전 세계의 공용언어라고 봐도 될 만큼, 사용 빈도가 높습니다. 그 말은 여러분도 실생활에서 사용하게 될 가능성이 높다는 뜻이겠죠? 어느 분야로 진로를 설정하든, 그 곳에서 영어라는 언어를 떼 놓고 생활할 수는 없을 것이라 생각해요.   Q. 본교 영어영문학과만의 특별한 문화나 행사가 있습니까?   A. 대표적인 행사로는 연세대학교 영어영문학과를 졸업하신 선배님들과 재학생들이 만나는 연세대학교 영어영문학과 총동문회가 있습니다. 문화라고 한다면, 뜻이 맞는 학우들끼리 모여 영문학 강독과 비평을 하는 소모임 등이 있다고 말할 수 있겠네요.   Q. 입학을 위해 준비해두면 좋은 것이 있습니까? 본인만의 입시 팁을 주자면?   A. 기본적으로 영어로 진행되는 수업이 많습니다. 모든 학습 자료는 당연히 영어로 되어 있고, 수업 시간에 질문 또는 학우들과 토론을 할 때도 영어를 사용해야 하는 경우가 많으니 영어 독해 및 말하기 능력이 기본적으로 필요하다고 말할 수 있어요. 이를 위해 영어를 자주 접할 수 있는 환경에 자주 노출되는 것이 중요하다고 생각합니다! 미국 드라마를 자주 본다거나 드라마 속 배우의 대사를 따라해본다거나 등의 연습이 영어를 듣는 귀가 트이는 데에, 자신감 있게 영어를 말하는 데에 큰 도움이 될 것 같아요.    Q. 미래의 후배들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있습니까?   A. 이번 인터뷰에 담긴 내용은 영어영문학과에 대한 극히 일부만 담은 내용이라고 할 수 있어요! 단순히 재밌을 것 같다, 혹은 무난한 학과인 것 같다 등의 이유로 전공 선택을 하기 보단, 본인이 희망하는 학교와 전공을 인터넷에 검색해본 후, 해당 학과 홈페이지에서 상세히 설명하는 커리큘럼을 꼭 읽어보세요. 그리고 이 전공이 나와 잘 맞을지 충분히 고민해본 후 전공을 선택하시는 걸 추천드립니다! 아무튼 자신을 위해 열심히 준비 중인 여러분의 노력과 여러분의 선택을 응원합니다 :)

• 농식품 해외 ‘안테나숍’, 케이-푸드(K-Food) 수출 영토 확대에 앞장서!

  해외 안테나숍 [리더스타임즈] 농림축산식품부는 올해 케이-푸드(K-Food) 100억불을 달성하고 중남미, 중동, 인도 등 신시장으로 수출 영토를 확대하기 위해 25개국 28개소에서 한국 농식품 ‘안테나숍’을 운영할 계획이다. 안테나숍은 한국 농식품의 인지도가 낮은 신규시장에 케이-푸드(K-Food) 전문 판매장을 운영하여 새로운 유통망을 개척하고 현지 소비자에게 우리 농식품의 인지도를 제고하기 위해 추진하는 사업이다. 안테나숍은 한국 농식품 전반을 취급하는 일반 안테나숍과 한국 신선 농산물을 전문으로 취급하는 케이-프레쉬 존(K-Fresh Zone, KFZ)으로 구성되어 있다. 일반 안테나숍은 2013년 처음으로 운영을 시작하였으며, 유럽, 중남미 등 한국 농식품 진출이 미미한 시장을 중심으로 신규 유통망을 개척해 오고 있다. 특히, 중남미 페루의 안테나숍은 연간 200만명 이상이 방문하는 세계적인 관광지 마추픽추로 가는 길목에 있어, 페루 소비자뿐만 아니라 전세계에서 온 관광객을 대상으로 케이-푸드(K-Food)를 홍보하고 있다. 이외에도 프랑스 대표 관광 도시 ‘니스’의 까르푸(Carrefour) 내 숍인숍, 영국 축구의 성지 ‘리버풀’ 중앙역 앞 등 유동인구가 많은 위치에 안테나숍을 운영하여 효과적으로 한국 농식품을 알리고 있다. 한편, 케이-프레쉬 존(K-Fresh Zone, KFZ)은 2017년 싱가포르를 시작으로 태국, 베트남 등으로 한국 신선 농산물 전문 유통망을 확대해 오고 있다. 특히, 2023년에는 아랍에미리트(UAE) 샤르자 지역에 케이-프레쉬 존(KFZ)을 최초로 개소하여 동남아 국가 위주로 집중되어 있던 신선 농산물 수출 시장을 다변화하고 있다. 올해는「케이-푸드 플러스(K-Food+) 수출 혁신 전략(’24.2)」에 따라 시장규모와 잠재력이 큰 3대 신시장(중동·중남미·인도)을 공략하고 수출을 확대하기 위해 안테나숍 총 28개소(계획) 중 12개소(중남미 5, 중동 4, 인도 3)를 신시장에서 운영할 계획이다. 농식품부 양주필 식품산업정책관은 “해외 안테나숍은 신규 수출시장의 유통망 개척부터 케이-푸드(K-Food) 홍보, 신규 바이어 발굴까지 다양한 역할을 하고 있다”라며, “안테나숍 이외에도 국제식품박람회 참가, 바이어초청 수출상담회 등 다양한 지원사업을 통해 3대 신시장을 개척하여 수출 영토를 확대해 나가기 위해 최선을 다하겠다”라고 말했다.

• The Ministry of Environment selected five target sites for the low-carbon green industrial complex construction project

    The Ministry of Environment said it has selected a total of five industrial complexes, including Busan Metropolitan City, Ulsan Metropolitan City, Donghae City, Cheongju Cityand Jinju City.  The ‘Low Carbon Green Industrial Complex Project’ is a new project promoted by the Ministry of Environment from this year to reduce greenhouse gases by reducing non-point pollution and improving water circulation for old industrial complexes vulnerable to non-point pollution management.  From March to June this year, the Ministry of Environment invited local governments to participate in the ‘Low Carbon Green Industrial Complex Project.’  Through documentand on-site evaluation by the committee composed of experts, the necessity and validity of the project, the basis for project promotion, the ease of operation and maintenance were comprehensively reviewed and selected as the final project targets.  Theproject will be implemented for three years from this year, with a total project cost about 35.5 billion won, with state and local expenses of 50 percent.  Busan Sinpyeong and Janglim Industrial Complex, which are adjacent to the Nakdonggang River estuary wetland protection area, plan to improve water quality and expand carbon absorption by installing low-impact development(LID) facilities such as roof greening and vegetation based on Janglim Port.  Cheongju Industrial Complex, which has been aging for more than 40 years and has large-scale commercial and residential areas nearby, aims to ease heat islands and improve water circulation by creating a clean road linked to LID facilities. The Sangpyeong Industrial Complex in Jinjuwhere frequent complaints occur in the center of urban dwellings, is an aging industrial complex for more than 50 years, and plans to expand carbon absorption sources, reduce rainwater outflows, and adapt to climate change by operating sprinklers linked to rainwater facilities.  Ryu Yeon-ki, a water environment policy officer at the Ministry of Environment, said, "The old industrial complex,created before the installation of non-point pollution reduction facilities was mandatory in 2006, has been vulnerable to non-point pollution.Throughlow-carbon green industrial complex construction project, we will try to reduce non-point pollution by participating in the industrial complex.”

• Danuri took photos of the Moon andEarth.

    The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute released the first Earth-Moon photograph taken by the lunar orbiter Danuri.    On August 26, Danuri photographed the Earth and the Moon together with a high-resolution camera about 1.24 million kilometers from Earth. This is taken for functional inspection at a distance more than 12,000 times the distance of the high-resolution camera for mission purposes.It also is very meaningful in that it is the first photo taken outside the Earth's gravity zone.    In addition, the magnetic field meter, another payload of Danuri, succeeded in observing the boundary of the Earth's magnetic field about five hours after the launch of Danuri.    As of Sep.1, Danuri has been traveling to the moon from a distance of 1.33 million kilometers (accumulated travel distance of 1.37 million kilometers) from Earth. In the future, Danuri plans to sail about 6 million kilometers to the moon's orbit by Dec.17 before entering the moon's mission orbit at the end of December through deceleration. After that, it will perform a science and technology mission by orbiting a circle 100km above the moon for a year from January 2023.    Meanwhile, the Korea Aerospace Research Institute will conduct a second trajectory correction maneuver for Danuri at 14:00 on September 2    The secondary trajectory correction maneuver is an essential process to minimize fuel consumption required for Danuri's Earth-Moon navigation and to reach the moon normally in time for the mission's schedule. The results of the second trajectory correction maneuver will be derived by the afternoon of September 4th through analysis.    Minister of Science and ICT Lee Jong-ho said, "Since the launch on August 5, we have been controlling Danuri 24 hours a day at the Korea Aerospace Exploration Agency control room. Through this opportunity, I would like to thank the researchers. The Ministry of Science and ICT and Research Institute will continue to do their best to succeed in Danuri's mission."    Meanwhile, Dr. Cho Young-ho, who is in charge ofDanuri's mission, said "Both the main body and the payload of Danuri are operating normally. The earth and the moon photos sent by Danuri this time are taken from a long distance, so the resolution is not good, but I am happy to show you meaningful results."

• 태국, 내년부터 외국인 관광객에 입국세 징수

    [리더스타임즈] 태국 관광부 장관 Pipat Ratchakitpraken은 외국인 관광객 대상 입국세 징수를 내년 초 시행할 예정임을 밝혔다. Pipat 장관은 Naresuan 대학에서 적정 외국인 관광객 입국세를 연구 중이며 연구는 이달 내 마무리 될 것이라고 첨언했다. 해당 연구에서는 입국 수단별(항공, 육로 등) 적정 입국세를 산정할 예정이다. 징수된 입국세는 외국인 관광객 보험에 사용되어 태국 정부가 사고로 상해를 입은 외국인 치료비를 전액 부담하지 않도록 하기위함이다. 태국 정부는 코로나 이전 한해 3~4억THB(약 8~12백만USD)을 외국인 관광객 치료 비용으로 지출했다. 한편 태국의 국가관광정책위원회는 1월부 300THB(약 8USD) 외국인 관광객 입국세를 징수하는 태국 관광청의 제안을 승인했다. • Ministry of Environment and City of Seoul will reduce 10 million disposable cups by the end of this year

  The Ministry of Environment and the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on August 24 at Seoul Plaza (based in Euljiro, Jung-gu, Seoul) that a ‘Zero Seoul’ launch event will be held with the aim of reducing 10 million disposable cups within this year.  Zero Seoul is a project to make Seoul a sustainable carbon-neutral city to resolve environmental problems such as garbage and climate change.It consists of zero cafes, zero restaurants, zero markets and zero campuses.  Representatives of seven coffee shops will pledge to participate in the Zero Café. AndNam Gyu-ri(actor and singer) will be appointed as the ambassador for Zero Seoul.   Since November 2020, the Ministry of Environment and the Seoul Metropolitan Government have been promoting a trial operation of disposable cups-free stores based on information and communication technology in a public-private partnership with coffee shop affiliates.  As a result of conducting a pilot project for the use of multi-use cups around Seoul City Hall in 2021, the return rate was 80%, confirming the possibility of the project.  The Zero Cafe project is conducted based on the results of the pilot project and expected to serve as an opportunity to change social and cultural awareness.  The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to select 20 regions with a large floating population and concentrated coffee shops as bases and distribute 800 unmanned returners for multi-use cups within the Zero Café store.  In addition, participating stores will be given a Zero Cafe symbol (logo). Usage fees for multi-use cup will be discounted from 30% to 50%.  Environment Ministersaid, "The Ministry of Environment has been pushing for a 'multi-use container reuse promotion project' since 2021." adding, "We will continue to support the spread of multi-use containers such as multi-use cups."

• The 21st Korea-U.S. Integrated Defense Dialogue (KIDD)

      The Ministry of National Defense and the United States Department of Defense held the 21st Korea-U.S. Integrated Defense Dialogue (KIDD) meeting in Seoul from August 16 to 17, 2022.  The meeting was attended by key defense and diplomatic officials from the two countries, with Huh Tae-geun, South Korean Defense Policy Office, and Siddharth Mohandas, the U.S. Defense Department's Deputy Defense Policy Officer, and VipinNarang, the Space Assistant.  At the meeting, the South Korea and U.S. delegations reaffirmed their common goal of complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and decided to continue their readiness to defend the Republic of Korea. In particular, they discussed North Korean threats, noting the increase in the frequency and scale of missile tests over the past few years. Considering North Korean evolving threats, it has decided to expand the scope and scale of joint exercises around the Korean Peninsula to strengthen its readiness with the Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS), which will take effect next week. In addition, Yang confirmed that it is important for the international community to fully implement the U.N. Security Council resolutions.  The two sides shared trends and evaluations related to the North Korean Punggye-ri nuclear test site. In addition, both sides confirmed that South Korea and the U.S. would jointly respond strongly and decisively, including the development of U.S. strategic assets, when North Korea conducts a nuclear test and both agreed that the regional and global security environment is becoming increasingly complex.  The two representatives reaffirmed the importance of complying with the "rule-based international order" based on international law and norms, including freedom of navigation and flight, and decided to work closely together to cope with regional challenges. Yang recently discussed illegal and unstable actions that hinder the implementation of U.N. Security Council resolutions on North Korea, and confirmed that he complies with international law, including peace and stability in the South China Sea and other oceans, free economic activities, freedom of navigation and air navigation and legal use of the ocean. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and decided to continue to promote defense and security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. To this end, the two sides said that they will continue to work closely together so that the "Interest Strategy Framework" envisioned by the Republic of Korea and the U.S. Interest Strategy can contribute to peace and stability in the region.

• President Yoon Seok-yeol Discusses Global Health Promotion with Bill Gates

    President Yoon Seok-yeol met Bill Gates, co-chairman of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, at the presidential office in Yongsan at 3 p.m. on the 17th. They discussed solidarity and cooperation measures to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic and promote global health, including a fair approach to vaccines.  The Gates Foundation was established in 2000 to "resolve poverty, disease and inequality around the world" and is working to improve health in developing countries, to solve hunger and poverty problems in accordance with the belief that all lives have equal value.   President Yoon thanked the Gates Foundation for its commitment and efforts to establish justice in the health sector in the international community.   Prior to the meeting, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Gates Foundation. By signing thisMOU, the government will contribute to strengthening global health resilience and resolving health inequality by expanding R&D cooperation in the global health care sector and cooperation with global health organizations such as global funds and CEPI.  Yoon said the South Korean government willstrengthen cooperation with the international community to promote universal values as a responsible member of the international community. Following the decision to contribute $300 million by participating in Act-A at the COVID-19 summit held in May, Korea plans to expand additional contributions to the international community by cooperating with the Gates Foundation based on the MOU.  In addition, they discussed the need for future technology development and cooperation, agreeing that the root cause of the recent pandemic is climate change.   Bill Gates said he was pleased that the Gates Foundation supports Korea's journey to becoming a global health leader. Korea and the Gates Foundation will work closely together to achieve the common goal of expanding contribution to global health security.

    Foreign Minister Park Jin met U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the afternoon of August 12.They shared views on regional situationsincluding Korean Peninsula, major international issues and preparation for the 77th U.N. General Assembly.   Park said the Korean government wants to play a more active role in defending the fundamental values of the U.N. Charter as a global hub contributing to freedom, peace and prosperity.  In addition, Park said he will continue to expand his role and contribution to achieving the goals of United Nations, including international peace, security, climate change, human rights and sustainable development. He also noted that Korea is currently a member of‘UN Human Rights Council’ and ‘UN Economic and Social Council’.  Secretary-General Guterres thanked the Korean government for its activities and contributions to the United Nations and expressed expectations for the Korean new government's willingness to continue to strengthen cooperation with the United Nations.  In particular, Secretary-General Guterres emphasized the importance of international cooperation in areas such as climate change, humanitarian aid, international peace and security. He called for the continued contribution and role of the Korean government for the protection and development of multilateralism.  Park emphasized the need to send a clear message to the North Korea that the UN and other international communities will not toleratenuclear development and consider it as a serious challenge to the international non-proliferation regime. Heasked for continued support from the UN to come up with effective countermeasures.  In response, Secretary-General Guterres reaffirmedsupport from Seoul to achieve sustainable peace on the Korean Peninsula.

• ‘The Washington Wall of Remembrance’, a symbol of the ROK-U.S. alliance engraved by the South Korean government.

      The Wall of Remembrance for the Korean War Veterans will appear at the Korean War Veterans Memorial Park in Washington, D.C., on the 27th. This monument engraved the names of 43,808 U.S. soldiers killed in the Korean War,   The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs said, "The Wall of Remembrance for Korean War Veterans will be held at 10 a.m. on the 27that Washington D.C. Memorial Park to honor the victims of the Korean War."  More than 3,000 people will attend the completion ceremonyincluding Park Min-sik, the head of the Republic of Korea's Department of Patriots and Veterans Affairs,John Tilally, chairman of the Korea War Veterans Association and Cho Tae-yong, the Korean ambassador.  July 27 is the day of Korean War Armistice Agreement (1953, the 69th anniversary of this year), the day of participation of UNforces andthe day of Korean War Veterans Memorial Park in Washington, D.C. was completed in 1995.  The Korean War Veterans Memorial Park, which is a representative Korean War memorial facility directly managed by the U.S. federal government. It was replaced 27 years after its completion, including ground reinforcement work, memory nail repair, Linden tree planting, scout statue repair and lighting installation.  After passing the U.S. Senate's ‘Wall of Remembrance Act’ on October 7, 2016, it was difficult to proceed due to lack of budget.But it was able to bear fruit with the efforts of both Korea and US in the end.  South Korea and the United States are allieswho have continued to develop the relationship since they formed a blood alliance in the Korean War.As Park mentioned, "The wall is a symbol of friendship between the two countries.”

• Korea became 5th consecutive member of the International SeabedAuthority (ISA)

    The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheriessaid that Korea was re-elected as a member of the International Seabed Authority (ISA)board, representing major investor groups along with France and Germany. It was decided at the International Seabed Authority (ISA) General Assembly in Kingston, Jamaica on 27th July.  The ISA is an international organization in charge of the development and management of deep-sea resources in international waters, with 168 countries participating in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Member countries will be elected as board members by running for deep-sea low-mineral consumers (Group A), major investors (Group B), deep-sea low-mineral exporters (Group C), developing countries (Group D) and regional arrangements (Group E).Currently, 17 countries, including Korea, belong to the major investor group (Group B). Korea will play the role of representing Group B along with Germany, France and India, which were elected together this time.   At first, Korea became the board of directors of Group E of the ISA in 1996. In recognition of active deep-sea development activities, Korea succeeded to become the member of Group B in 2009. Followingthe decision of the General Assembly, Korea was appointed as the director of Group B for five consecutive times and willcontinue to play a leading role in the major policy-making process of the ISA for four years from 2023 to 2026. Meanwhile, Korea has secured five exclusive exploration mines (a total of 1.15 millionkm2) in the Pacific and Indian Ocean pollution and the Pacific Island Bureau EEZ. Among them, three mining areas (manganese monocycle, undersea hydrothermal deposit, and manganese angle) are being promoted by signing contracts with the ISA.  Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Cho Seung-hwan said, "Korea's re-election as a member of the International Seabed Authority has enabled us to actively reflect our position in establishing international standards for deep-sea activities."
