  • How is the blossoming season predicted in spring?
[Leaders Times] Pretty spring flowers!     How is the blossom season predicted in spring?   Climate change instigates flowers blooming even earlier.     Daily articles report the blossom season appearing earlier than in the past century. How can we anticipate the blooming of flowers, which vary depending on each region, town, or avenue? And why is flowering influenced by climate change?    Temperature and photoperiod are necessary for blooming.   According to one study, plants recognize seasonal change, which is affected by temperature and photoperiod (the length of light), and flowers bloom when they get the best conditions for flowering. So, diverse services announce the blossom season, except for the weather service after examining the highest temperature and the blooming day.  ※ The weather service does announce the fluorescence of flowers; they do not predict the blossom season. Services such as forest service and private weather services were provided starting in 2016.    What was the standard of the past blossoming day?    Weather services make seasonal observations that identify the progress of climate change through observation, analysis, and estimation of the sample tree. They have recorded the generation and fluorescence, full of blooming Japanese apricot flowers, forsythias, azaleas, and cherry blossoms with the naked eye.    Usually, full blooms are 2-3 days after fluorescence or around a week if they are late.  Check the data for blooming flowers and forecast them before enjoying spring flowers!

  • Cofounding Angel for Kor-Fils’s Journey with Leaderstimes,
I contributed to donating aid to single parent Korean Filipino households since 2021. Starting off as a journalist for Leaderstimes, I got in touch with the Philippines coordinator Mr. Kong to help create the NGO with Global Leaders Club. As our organization funded the education for Filipino children throughout the years, I decided to visit two of the families supported by Angel for Kor-Fils’s Journey in Silang, Philippines.   Silang, situated an hour away from Metro Manila, unfolded as a testament to the socio-economic disparities prevailing in the country, as the families supported by the nonprofit organization resided in homes with bare minimum support.   Despite the challenges posed by their living conditions, Jisoo and Jinju, two remarkable individuals aged 10 and 16, opened their homes and hearts to me. What stood out amidst these challenging circumstances was the extraordinary passion for education exhibited by Jisoo and Jinju. Jisoo, at the age of 10, harbors dreams of becoming a medical doctor, with a fervent interest in science. As she delves into the intricacies of biology, exploring different organs, her aspiration to contribute to the medical field shines brightly. On the other hand, 16-year-old Jinju found a love for accounting and business, looking to start her own business one day to support her family.   These dreams, woven with determination and resilience, are particularly remarkable given their humble beginnings. The undying enthusiasm for education and clear career goals set Jisoo and Jinju apart. Our culture exchange trip, sharing Korean culture through gifting folktale books and a traditional Korean board game Yut-nori, hoped to encourage the young scholars to embrace both their Korean and Filipina identities while pursuing their educational goals. I have no doubt that the girls will find success as long as they maintain their persistence and patience.   I realized how much potential there is in every child through conversations with the families during the trip. Providing scholarships and support for education, I was honored to be able to provide the chance for economically disadvantaged to shine. With Leaderstimes and Global Leaders Club, I seek to continue my multicultural, philanthropy and expand Angel for Kor-Fils’s Journey to more households in need. As we’ve already expanded into Cambodia, I hope Global Leaders Club members will join in our support for the underprivileged.

The Korea-EU FTA marks its 12th anniversary this year and has served as a key axis of trade and investment between the two sides despite economic uncertainties such as COVID-19 and global inflation. In particular, the EU is Korea's top three trade target. The trade volume between the two sides reached $136.3 billion, the largest ever, marking the increase in petroleum products and intermediate goods exports.    Each year, the two sides evaluate the implementation of the FTA and check the difficulties of trade and investment through the Korea-EU FTA Commodity Trade Commission. This year, the Commodity Trade Commission intensively discussed policies and bills that the two countries are introducing and discussing for the carbon-neutral industry.  In particular, Korea emphasized that the battery law, the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), and the carbon-neutral industry law promoted by the EU should not be an excessive burden on companies and should be applied non-discriminately to companies inside and outside the country. In addition, detailed laws for the implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which took effect on May 27 this year, were enacted as soon as possible to minimize uncertainties among companies and to fully recognize carbon prices paid by exporting countries in Korea.  On the other hand, the EU's interest in reforming Korea's electric vehicle subsidies and promoting laws and systems related to offshore wind power was fully explained to enhance mutual understanding. In addition, Korea inquired about other concerns on their side, such as the EU's regulations on the use of bioplastics and regulations on offshore subsidies, to continue consultations.  The two sides also decided to check the overall implementation of the FTA through the Korea-EU FTA Trade Commission in the second half of the year and discuss ways to expand economic cooperation.

The EU will urge South Korea to provide direct arms aid to Ukraine at the Korea-EU summit slated for May 22, EurActiv reported on May 15, citing a senior EU official.  According to the report, the EUis expected to ask for a forward-looking stance from South Korea, which has long refused to provide arms and other military equipment to Ukraine.  Ramon Pardo, who is in charge of South Korea at the Security, Diplomacy and Strategy Center at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB), said, "It is expected to take months to produce ammunition in the EU due to a lack of explosives, but SouthKorea has the ability to supply it in a short time and is highly compatible with NATO equipment used by Ukrainian forces."  He pointed out that it is impossible for SouthKorea to supply ammunition to countries that are engaged in war due to legal restrictions. But, through an alternative process, exporting ammunition to EU member states and donating it to Ukraine, is possible.   In particular, he pointed out that even if South Korea decides to provide direct weapons to Ukraine, the benefit of South Korea's direct weapons support to Ukraine is also insignificant in that it is supported through neighboring countries such as Poland.  Although the U.S. and South Korea are currently discussing related issues, the EU evaluatedthat the EU's request to South Korea is only a political posture, given that there is no direct military alliance with South Korea.  NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg visited South Korea in January and asked for arms aid to Ukraine, mentioning that the final choice is up to South Korea's decision.     Pardopredicted that no one would pose legal issues with the Korean government or companies providing weapons to Ukraine. However, he also prospected that if South Korea reverses its previous stance, the government will put in an awkward position where its justification for rejecting other war-torn countries' demands for arms aid will disappear.

  • EU Commission braces Apple's attempt to divert EU single charger guideline.
The EU Commission expressed its opinion that Apple's installation of an Authenticator chip to limit the use of uncertified chargers violates the "EU Single Charger Directive."  The EU Commissioner for internal market recently expressed his position on Apple's iPhone 15 to be released this year, which is actually attempting to bypass the "EU Single Charger Guidelines" by installinga certification chip that restricts the use of accessories not certified by Apple.  The executive agency pointed out that the purpose of the "Single Charger Guidelines" is to ensure the interchangeability of all communication equipment and chargers regardless of brand. It is to enhance consumer benefits and reduce costs and waste.  The agency stressed that the directive prohibits any restrictions on the compatibility of all telecommunications equipment and chargers after 28 December 2024. The goods that do not meet single charger requirements cannot be released in the EU.  In particular, the Commission noted that it had clearly communicated to Apple in March that it was not allowed to restrict the compatibility of telecommunications equipment and chargers after the guidelines took effect.  Monitoring the implementation of these guidelines is carried out by the relevant authorities of the Member States, prohibiting the sale of products that violate the requirements and imposing sanctions on them.  The Commission will announce guidelines for the uniform application of EU regional guidelines around the third quarter of this year.
