RuralDevelopmentAdministrationIdentifiedMicroorganismsthatDecomposeAgriculturalWaste Plastics
[LeadersTimes]TheRuralDevelopmentAdministrationhasidentifiedmicroorganismsthatweaken the physical and chemical durability of polyethylene surfaces used in agriculturalproducts, such as vinyl mulching and greenhouse covers, by modifying and decomposingthem. Polyethylene (PE) is the most commonly used plastic in agriculture due to its excellentdurability and chemical resistance. It is primarily used for mulching and greenhouse cladding. However, discarded waste vinyl remains in the environment and adversely affects agricultureas it does not decompose naturally. Significant research efforts have focused on developingenvironmentally friendly decomposition methods. The newly discovered microorganisms, KACC 83073BP and Trametes trogii KACC83074BP, were isolated from domestic agricultural lands and forests. These fungi attach tothe surface of polyethylene films, initiating the oxidative degradation process, the first step inbiodegradation, significantly reducing the mechanical properties of the plastic. Among these, Trametes trogii KACC 83074BP exhibited the highest oxidation effect onmulchingfilm.After10daysoftreatmentwiththisstrain,theoxidationeffectroseby44.7%compared to the single treatment with KACC 83073BP from the Pleurotus genus. Transcriptanalysis of Trametes trogii KACC 83074BP revealed a gene whose expression increasedearly and late in the deterioration process of the polyethylene film. Pleurotus spp. KACC83073BP, when incubated with Preussia spp. HRK33 KACC 81283BP, reduced the initialoxidation time of polyethylene by more than 50% compared to single treatments. In general, studies have reported that microbial oxidation of plastic takes at least a month. However, themicroorganismsdiscoveredbytheRuralDevelopmentAdministration demonstrated a significantly accelerated decomposition process, with oxidation of thepolyethylene surface beginning within approximately 7 days of culturing. Theadministrationhasappliedforfourpatentsrelatedtothesemicroorganismsthatpromotepolyethylene decomposition. These findings will serve as fundamental data for the"Proteomics-based Polyethylene Decomposition Enzyme and Decomposition MechanismInvestigation Project" (Korea Program for International Cooperation in AgriculturalTechnology). "The amount of plastic that is thrown away every year and enters the environment issignificant, so eco-friendly treatment alternatives is necessary,” said Sangbum Kim at theAgricultural Microbiology Division of the Rural Development Administration. "This study ishighly meaningful as it secureda research foundation for the eco-friendly treatment of wasteplastics…. We aim to uncover the action mechanism of polyethylene-degrading enzymesusing omics tools such as transcriptomics and proteomics."

How is the blossoming season predicted in spring?
- [Leaders Times] Pretty spring flowers! How is the blossom season predicted in spring? Climate change instigates flowers blooming even earlier. Daily articles report the blossom season appearing earlier than in the past century. How can we anticipate the blooming of flowers, which vary depending on each region, town, or avenue? And why is flowering influenced by climate change? Temperature and photoperiod are necessary for blooming. According to one study, plants recognize seasonal change, which is affected by temperature and photoperiod (the length of light), and flowers bloom when they get the best conditions for flowering. So, diverse services announce the blossom season, except for the weather service after examining the highest temperature and the blooming day. ※ The weather service does announce the fluorescence of flowers; they do not predict the blossom season. Services such as forest service and private weather services were provided starting in 2016. What was the standard of the past blossoming day? Weather services make seasonal observations that identify the progress of climate change through observation, analysis, and estimation of the sample tree. They have recorded the generation and fluorescence, full of blooming Japanese apricot flowers, forsythias, azaleas, and cherry blossoms with the naked eye. Usually, full blooms are 2-3 days after fluorescence or around a week if they are late. Check the data for blooming flowers and forecast them before enjoying spring flowers!

Cofounding Angel for Kor-Fils’s Journey with Leaderstimes,
- I contributed to donating aid to single parent Korean Filipino households since 2021. Starting off as a journalist for Leaderstimes, I got in touch with the Philippines coordinator Mr. Kong to help create the NGO with Global Leaders Club. As our organization funded the education for Filipino children throughout the years, I decided to visit two of the families supported by Angel for Kor-Fils’s Journey in Silang, Philippines. Silang, situated an hour away from Metro Manila, unfolded as a testament to the socio-economic disparities prevailing in the country, as the families supported by the nonprofit organization resided in homes with bare minimum support. Despite the challenges posed by their living conditions, Jisoo and Jinju, two remarkable individuals aged 10 and 16, opened their homes and hearts to me. What stood out amidst these challenging circumstances was the extraordinary passion for education exhibited by Jisoo and Jinju. Jisoo, at the age of 10, harbors dreams of becoming a medical doctor, with a fervent interest in science. As she delves into the intricacies of biology, exploring different organs, her aspiration to contribute to the medical field shines brightly. On the other hand, 16-year-old Jinju found a love for accounting and business, looking to start her own business one day to support her family. These dreams, woven with determination and resilience, are particularly remarkable given their humble beginnings. The undying enthusiasm for education and clear career goals set Jisoo and Jinju apart. Our culture exchange trip, sharing Korean culture through gifting folktale books and a traditional Korean board game Yut-nori, hoped to encourage the young scholars to embrace both their Korean and Filipina identities while pursuing their educational goals. I have no doubt that the girls will find success as long as they maintain their persistence and patience. I realized how much potential there is in every child through conversations with the families during the trip. Providing scholarships and support for education, I was honored to be able to provide the chance for economically disadvantaged to shine. With Leaderstimes and Global Leaders Club, I seek to continue my multicultural, philanthropy and expand Angel for Kor-Fils’s Journey to more households in need. As we’ve already expanded into Cambodia, I hope Global Leaders Club members will join in our support for the underprivileged.

EU will urge South Korea to provide military aid to Ukraine
- The EU will urge South Korea to provide direct arms aid to Ukraine at the Korea-EU summit slated for May 22, EurActiv reported on May 15, citing a senior EU official. According to the report, the EUis expected to ask for a forward-looking stance from South Korea, which has long refused to provide arms and other military equipment to Ukraine. Ramon Pardo, who is in charge of South Korea at the Security, Diplomacy and Strategy Center at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB), said, "It is expected to take months to produce ammunition in the EU due to a lack of explosives, but SouthKorea has the ability to supply it in a short time and is highly compatible with NATO equipment used by Ukrainian forces." He pointed out that it is impossible for SouthKorea to supply ammunition to countries that are engaged in war due to legal restrictions. But, through an alternative process, exporting ammunition to EU member states and donating it to Ukraine, is possible. In particular, he pointed out that even if South Korea decides to provide direct weapons to Ukraine, the benefit of South Korea's direct weapons support to Ukraine is also insignificant in that it is supported through neighboring countries such as Poland. Although the U.S. and South Korea are currently discussing related issues, the EU evaluatedthat the EU's request to South Korea is only a political posture, given that there is no direct military alliance with South Korea. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg visited South Korea in January and asked for arms aid to Ukraine, mentioning that the final choice is up to South Korea's decision. Pardopredicted that no one would pose legal issues with the Korean government or companies providing weapons to Ukraine. However, he also prospected that if South Korea reverses its previous stance, the government will put in an awkward position where its justification for rejecting other war-torn countries' demands for arms aid will disappear.

EU Commission braces Apple's attempt to divert EU single charger guideline.
- The EU Commission expressed its opinion that Apple's installation of an Authenticator chip to limit the use of uncertified chargers violates the "EU Single Charger Directive." The EU Commissioner for internal market recently expressed his position on Apple's iPhone 15 to be released this year, which is actually attempting to bypass the "EU Single Charger Guidelines" by installinga certification chip that restricts the use of accessories not certified by Apple. The executive agency pointed out that the purpose of the "Single Charger Guidelines" is to ensure the interchangeability of all communication equipment and chargers regardless of brand. It is to enhance consumer benefits and reduce costs and waste. The agency stressed that the directive prohibits any restrictions on the compatibility of all telecommunications equipment and chargers after 28 December 2024. The goods that do not meet single charger requirements cannot be released in the EU. In particular, the Commission noted that it had clearly communicated to Apple in March that it was not allowed to restrict the compatibility of telecommunications equipment and chargers after the guidelines took effect. Monitoring the implementation of these guidelines is carried out by the relevant authorities of the Member States, prohibiting the sale of products that violate the requirements and imposing sanctions on them. The Commission will announce guidelines for the uniform application of EU regional guidelines around the third quarter of this year.

Germany permanently ends nuclear power generation after grid separation.
- Germany will permanently end nuclear power generation on the 15th (Sat) by separating the power grid of the remaining three nuclear power plants. Germany announced its withdrawal from nuclear power in 2002.Under Angela Merkel’s leadership, the movement to exit nuclear power has accelerated since the Fukushima nuclear crisis in 2011. The timing of the shutdown of the three nuclear power plants was originally scheduled for the end of 2022.It was postponed due to the suspension of Russian gas supplies. Despite the energy crisis, Germany plans to separate three nuclear power plants from the power grid, including the southernIasr2, the southwestern Neckarwestheim, and the northwest Emsland, which supplied 6% of Germany's total energy last year. Germany's share of nuclear power generation in 1997 was 30.8%. The German government emphasized that the energy crisis is under control by securing gas reserves and establishing LNG infrastructure as a measure to stabilize energy supply and demand following the suspension of the Russian gas supply. Furthermore, in response to energy supply instability caused by Russian gas and the disposal of nuclear power generation, the proportion of renewable energy will be increased to 80% by 2030. To this end, Olaf Scholz suggests installing four to five wind turbines every day for years to come. However, it would be difficult to achieve the goal considering the current speed, which installed only 551 wind turbineslast year.

In order to strengthen the capacity of renewable energy, the goal of expanding 150 gigawatts of offshore wind power generation capacity in all G7 member countries by 2030 and securing more than 1terawatt of solar power generation capacity has been set. [Nuclear power] Countries that chose nuclear power as a way to achieve climate neutrality agreed to actively support the development and construction of small and other advanced reactors and to help form a working group to easereliance on Russiancivilian nuclear-related items. [Natural gas] Japan, which imports most of its energy needs, urged to maintain liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a transitional energy source for energy conversion for at least 10-15 years. In response, the G7 stated in its agreement that investment in the gas sector could be suitable for responding to potential energy market disruptions caused by the war in Ukraine on the condition that it meets its climate response goals. Meanwhile, the G7 agreed to set 2040 as a new deadline for eradicating further environmental destruction by plastics, ten years earlier than its previous goal.
