The
Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Disease Control and Prevention
Agency (KDCA) announced that the Korean delegation will attend the 156th World
Health Organization (WHO) Executive Board meeting, which is being held in
Geneva, Switzerland from February 3 to February 11.
The WHO
Executive Board consists of 34 member countries, which will review and exchange
opinions on the agenda for the upcoming World Health Assembly (WHA) scheduled
for May. In the lead-up to the Executive Board meeting, the 41st Programme
Budget Administration Committee, which took place from January 29 to January
31, was held to review administrative matters such as budget, organization, and
personnel issues.
The
Korean delegation at the Executive Board will be led by Deputy Minister Park
Min-Soo of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, who is a member of the Executive
Board. Deputy Representative Kim Hye-Jin, Director of Planning and Coordination
at the Ministry of Health and Welfare, will represent the Programme Budget
Administration Committee. The government delegation, which includes officials
from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the KDCA, and advisory bodies, will
participate in the discussions on the agenda. During the meeting, the
delegation is also planning to hold bilateral talks with key Executive Board
members and WHO Deputy Secretary-General, including representatives from
Australia and the Maldives.
On the
first day of the Executive Board meeting, February 3, Dr. Tedros Adhanom
Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, will report on the major achievements of the
previous year and outline future tasks. Following this report, Deputy Minister
Park Min-Soo will emphasize that 2025 should be a turning point in the global
effort to achieve universal health coverage by 2030. He will urge member
countries to take more active steps toward collaboration to address emerging
health challenges such as chronic diseases and climate change.
The
discussions at the Executive Board will include a mid-term report on the
2024-2025 programme budget performance, as well as deliberations on the draft
programme budget for 2026-2027. In addition, various health care issues will be
addressed, including universal health coverage, health crises, and health
promotion.
Deputy
Minister Park Min-Soo emphasized the importance of this year in achieving the
sustainable development goals, including universal health coverage by 2030. He
stated, “This year is a critical time for strengthening healthcare capacity in
each member state and enhancing cooperation within the international health
community.” He added, “Based on the discussions at this Executive Board, the
Korean government will fulfill its role and responsibility as a key nation at the
78th World Health Assembly, contributing to global health efforts.”
