RuralDevelopmentAdministrationIdentifiedMicroorganismsthatDecomposeAgriculturalWaste Plastics
[LeadersTimes]TheRuralDevelopmentAdministrationhasidentifiedmicroorganismsthatweaken the physical and chemical durability of polyethylene surfaces used in agriculturalproducts, such as vinyl mulching and greenhouse covers, by modifying and decomposingthem. Polyethylene (PE) is the most commonly used plastic in agriculture due to its excellentdurability and chemical resistance. It is primarily used for mulching and greenhouse cladding. However, discarded waste vinyl remains in the environment and adversely affects agricultureas it does not decompose naturally. Significant research efforts have focused on developingenvironmentally friendly decomposition methods. The newly discovered microorganisms, KACC 83073BP and Trametes trogii KACC83074BP, were isolated from domestic agricultural lands and forests. These fungi attach tothe surface of polyethylene films, initiating the oxidative degradation process, the first step inbiodegradation, significantly reducing the mechanical properties of the plastic. Among these, Trametes trogii KACC 83074BP exhibited the highest oxidation effect onmulchingfilm.After10daysoftreatmentwiththisstrain,theoxidationeffectroseby44.7%compared to the single treatment with KACC 83073BP from the Pleurotus genus. Transcriptanalysis of Trametes trogii KACC 83074BP revealed a gene whose expression increasedearly and late in the deterioration process of the polyethylene film. Pleurotus spp. KACC83073BP, when incubated with Preussia spp. HRK33 KACC 81283BP, reduced the initialoxidation time of polyethylene by more than 50% compared to single treatments. In general, studies have reported that microbial oxidation of plastic takes at least a month. However, themicroorganismsdiscoveredbytheRuralDevelopmentAdministration demonstrated a significantly accelerated decomposition process, with oxidation of thepolyethylene surface beginning within approximately 7 days of culturing. Theadministrationhasappliedforfourpatentsrelatedtothesemicroorganismsthatpromotepolyethylene decomposition. These findings will serve as fundamental data for the"Proteomics-based Polyethylene Decomposition Enzyme and Decomposition MechanismInvestigation Project" (Korea Program for International Cooperation in AgriculturalTechnology). "The amount of plastic that is thrown away every year and enters the environment issignificant, so eco-friendly treatment alternatives is necessary,” said Sangbum Kim at theAgricultural Microbiology Division of the Rural Development Administration. "This study ishighly meaningful as it secureda research foundation for the eco-friendly treatment of wasteplastics…. We aim to uncover the action mechanism of polyethylene-degrading enzymesusing omics tools such as transcriptomics and proteomics."

How is the blossoming season predicted in spring?
- [Leaders Times] Pretty spring flowers! How is the blossom season predicted in spring? Climate change instigates flowers blooming even earlier. Daily articles report the blossom season appearing earlier than in the past century. How can we anticipate the blooming of flowers, which vary depending on each region, town, or avenue? And why is flowering influenced by climate change? Temperature and photoperiod are necessary for blooming. According to one study, plants recognize seasonal change, which is affected by temperature and photoperiod (the length of light), and flowers bloom when they get the best conditions for flowering. So, diverse services announce the blossom season, except for the weather service after examining the highest temperature and the blooming day. ※ The weather service does announce the fluorescence of flowers; they do not predict the blossom season. Services such as forest service and private weather services were provided starting in 2016. What was the standard of the past blossoming day? Weather services make seasonal observations that identify the progress of climate change through observation, analysis, and estimation of the sample tree. They have recorded the generation and fluorescence, full of blooming Japanese apricot flowers, forsythias, azaleas, and cherry blossoms with the naked eye. Usually, full blooms are 2-3 days after fluorescence or around a week if they are late. Check the data for blooming flowers and forecast them before enjoying spring flowers!

Cofounding Angel for Kor-Fils’s Journey with Leaderstimes,
- I contributed to donating aid to single parent Korean Filipino households since 2021. Starting off as a journalist for Leaderstimes, I got in touch with the Philippines coordinator Mr. Kong to help create the NGO with Global Leaders Club. As our organization funded the education for Filipino children throughout the years, I decided to visit two of the families supported by Angel for Kor-Fils’s Journey in Silang, Philippines. Silang, situated an hour away from Metro Manila, unfolded as a testament to the socio-economic disparities prevailing in the country, as the families supported by the nonprofit organization resided in homes with bare minimum support. Despite the challenges posed by their living conditions, Jisoo and Jinju, two remarkable individuals aged 10 and 16, opened their homes and hearts to me. What stood out amidst these challenging circumstances was the extraordinary passion for education exhibited by Jisoo and Jinju. Jisoo, at the age of 10, harbors dreams of becoming a medical doctor, with a fervent interest in science. As she delves into the intricacies of biology, exploring different organs, her aspiration to contribute to the medical field shines brightly. On the other hand, 16-year-old Jinju found a love for accounting and business, looking to start her own business one day to support her family. These dreams, woven with determination and resilience, are particularly remarkable given their humble beginnings. The undying enthusiasm for education and clear career goals set Jisoo and Jinju apart. Our culture exchange trip, sharing Korean culture through gifting folktale books and a traditional Korean board game Yut-nori, hoped to encourage the young scholars to embrace both their Korean and Filipina identities while pursuing their educational goals. I have no doubt that the girls will find success as long as they maintain their persistence and patience. I realized how much potential there is in every child through conversations with the families during the trip. Providing scholarships and support for education, I was honored to be able to provide the chance for economically disadvantaged to shine. With Leaderstimes and Global Leaders Club, I seek to continue my multicultural, philanthropy and expand Angel for Kor-Fils’s Journey to more households in need. As we’ve already expanded into Cambodia, I hope Global Leaders Club members will join in our support for the underprivileged.

Along the Han River
- In the past, when there were no trains or cars, ships were essential means of transportation, and the Han River was an important sea route. The ferry on the Han River was always crowded. The ferry was noisy with scholars going to take tests, merchants carrying goods, and officials carrying grain. The Han river has changed a lot from the past. The crowded ferry, the yellow-graped sailboat (황포돛배) floating on the river, all disappeared. The tile-roofed houses and thatched houses along the river were converted into apartments, and the banks of the river, where grass grew, were filled with concrete. However, the Han River still plays an important role in the middle of Seoul. As Western civilization entered Korea, the Han River also changed significantly. In 1900, the first modern bridge was built on the Han River. And soon a train came and went on the railroad bridge. In 1917, the Han River Bridge was built for people to walk around. At that time, there were many people going to and from the Han River by boat. However, since the construction of Cheongpyeong Dam in 1944, the Han River has ended its role as a waterway. Then the Korean War broke out. The Han River Bridge was destroyed, and it was in chaos. But the misfortune didn't last long. After the Korean War, the people of our country made constant efforts to boost the economy. While digging the soil and sand of the Han River, they built a house and built a concrete embankment on the Han River. All thatched houses and shanty towns around the Han River disappeared, and apartments that rose high in the sky were built there. Trains and cars were rushing over the Han River bridge. People admired this, calling it the "Miracle of the Han River. The Han River has been home to small insects, fish, and birds for tens of thousands of years. However, as the Han River was developed, many birds and fish lost their places to go. The banks of the river where water plants were supposed to grow were blocked by concrete embankments. The wastewater flowing from the river killed or deformed many fish. Then, people realized that many lives in the Han River had disappeared. People hurriedly tried to regain the clean Han River. These efforts are still ongoing. Perhaps because of the hard work and care of the people, the migratory birds began to return one by one. Bamseom Island, located under Sogang Bridge, is a world-class habitat for migratory birds. About 30 species visit the island in summer and 46 species in winter.

Let’s get to know about a bigger world!
- Let’s get to know about a bigger world! San Francisco, USA San Francisco is a city located in Bay Area, California, western United States. Along with New York City, San Francisco has the highest price in the United States. If you eat out, you have to pay at least $15 per person. One of the biggest feature of San Francisco is racial diversity. The reason can be found in history. Since the SF used to be Mexican territory, there are still a lot of Hispanics to live. Second, after the liberation of slaves, many black people came in because of many ports in SF. Third, Asians settled down and began to live in the 19th century. Therefore, virtually all races coexist, and racism is a subject of social criticism. San Francisco's landmark is the Golden Gate Bridge, the world's first suspension bridge connecting San Francisco Bay and Marine County. Driving on a foggy day can be dangerous, but the view on a fine day is wonderful. It’s good to drive on the bridge, but I recommend you take a leisurely walk and enjoy the view of San Francisco and the bay area.

The completion ceremony for the expansion of wooden research facilities on concrete buildings.
- The National Institute of Forest Science in Korea announced on March 4 that it held a completion ceremony by expanding the "Forest Engineering Comprehensive Experimental Building" at the Forest Technology Management Research Institute located in Pocheon, Gyeonggi-do. The Forest Engineering Comprehensive Experimental Building, newly built in 2013 for basic experiments in the field of forest engineering research. As as interest in the role and environmental impact of wood harvesting has increased recently, it expanded its research facilities to strengthen related research. The building was used as many laboratories for studying soil dynamics, multipurpose strength, hydraulic power laboratory, and forestry growth measurement. By the way it newly developed into ▲ a forestry machine control and measurement laboratory ▲ a forest biomass fuel property laboratory ▲ a detailed data analysis laboratory ▲ forest work education and training. Particularly, the expansion of this research facility suggested a new paradigm for eco-friendly public buildings by expanding them into wooden buildings (area of 339.83㎡) on the existing one-story concrete building (area of 360.15㎡.) The amount of wood used for the expansion is about 80㎡, and the carbon storage effect is about 20TC (carbon tone), which is the same as the amount of carbon absorbed annually by about27000 pine trees (born in 2015) on an area of about 12 soccer fields (about83700㎡). Hwang Jae-hong, the director of the National Institute of Forest Technology Management, said, "With the expansion of the Forest Engineering Comprehensive Experimental Building, we will actively promote research on wood harvesting technology development for a virtuous cycle of forest resources such as forest management, wood use, and re-forest."

South Korea’s next president, Yoon Seok-Yeol
- Conservative candidate Yoon Seok-yeol will become South Korea's next president. The National Election Commission said that the opposition party leader won 48.56% of the votes, ahead of candidate Lee by 47.83%. The current president, Moon Jae In could not serve a second term because the presidential term is a five-year term in Korea. Yoon is a political rookie who spent the last 27 years of his career as a prosecutor. He began his political activities after serving as chief prosecutor who led a high-profile investigation into the corruption scandal that plagued President Moon's aides. Yoon's victory brought the South Korean government back into the hands of conservatives five years after Park Geun Hye was impeached for her corruption scandal. He must cope with North Korea's threat and heightened tensions between the United States and China, and of course lead South Korea through the next stage of the pandemic. Lee Jae-myung sent a congratulatory message to his rival Yoon Seok-yeol. “ I earnestly ask you to open an era of integration and harmony beyond division and conflict. I still believe in our people. Our people were great. Even during the COVID-19 incident, we showed a high sense of democracy with high turnout. As long as you are there, Korea will continue to move forward.” He also said he hopes to overcome the COVID-19 crisis as soon as possible and return to daily life.

How most of Filipinos drink clean water?
- Drinking water : Source of life 91% of the Philippine population can use the minimum basic water service, but the regional basic water service utilization rate is unequal from 62% to 100%. About 99% of wealthy families are likely to use basic water services.About 6 million Filipinos still have open bowel movement, and about 20 million people do not have access to basic hygiene facilities. More than 75 million Filipinos receive basic hygiene services at the national level, but considerable inequality still exists. In the Philippines, there are many waterborne infectious diseases caused by contaminated water mixed with lime and viruses due to volcanic areas. Furthermore, it is necessary to pay more attention to the active reproduction of various bacteria and micro-organisms here, where hot weather persists. This water is absolutely not suitable for drinking water, but many people still live drinking water mixed with lime. Water is basically what people need in their lives. However, is there any way to help poor families suffering from lack of infrastructure and economic difficulties in water and sewage? Every March 22 is World Water Day designated by the United Nations. About 1 billion people around the world are having difficulty in obtaining drinking water, and the UN report analyzed that by 2030, water demand will exceed by 40% of supply. I hope we will have time to reflect on the meaning of water that you have forgotten about its importance. In addition, we need to try to find and practice specific ways to love water in our daily lives. For me, my family, those who suffer from water from afar, and the Earth. Water that someone throws away or wastes without thinking is more desperate than anything else for children on the other side of the world.

The Hard Steel from Hydrogen, which is Hydrogen Reduction Steel.
- The Hard Steel from Hydrogen, which is Hydrogen Reduction Steel. “Water is the coal of the future. I have no doubt that water will be used as fuel. -(L')Ile mysterious by Jules Verne Hydrogen and Oxygen of water provide infinite energy. “ Surprisingly, the story of Jules Verne comes true. What needs to produce iron? It needs iron ore which is a combination of iron and oxygen. In this course, we should separate oxygen to produce pure iron. When iron ore and coal are melted, carbon monoxide occured, it causes hydrogen reduction and makes pure iron. But here is a problem. There is lots of carbon dioxide in iron. But we can solve the problem with ‘Hydrogen reduction steel’. What is hydrogen reduction steel? The way of providing iron using high concentration hydrogen as a reductant instead of coals. It is called reduced iron. It can protect the environment while producing water rather than carbon dioxide. Posco announced ‘decarbonization technology’ that commercializes Hydrogen reduction steel until 2050.
